It has not been a happy
week for Tring, but the players did their bit to
dispel the gloom, turning in a solid performance
to end a run of four straight league defeats
against a Hungerford team in the top half of the
table.
Tring made the stronger start to the match and
were unlucky not to take the lead in the third
minute. Adam Dale's free kick found Kevin
Chakaodza six yards out, but Chakaodza's downward
header was kept out by the foot of keeper Dave
Leno. Another chance arrived on 11 minutes. The
excellent Wayne Barber battled to win and hold on
to the ball in midfield before releasing Alex
Kinsley with the perfect pass, but Kinsley ran on
to slice his shot over the bar.
Tring's good play eventually paid off, although
there was an element of fortune about the way
they took the lead on 21 minutes. Barber got to
the bye-line and sent the ball fizzing across the
face of goal, and the unfortunate Bobby Tong
could not get out of the way, deflecting the ball
into his own net.
Chakaodza went close to increasing Tring's lead
on 37 minutes when his dipping volley went just
over the bar, but he only had to wait another
three minutes. Dave Butler's pass put Chakaodza
clean through, and while the defenders claimed
offside, the assistant's flag stayed down and
Chakaodza ran on to calmly slot the ball past
Leno to send Tring into the break 2-0 ahead.
After a roasting from their manager that could
have peeled the paint off the dressing room
walls, Hungerford started the second half with
more purpose, and got themselves back into the
game on 55 minutes. A corner to the far post was
headed back across goal, and Dan Kirby stuck out
a boot to stab the ball into the net.
Kinsley almost re-established Tring's two-goal
lead two minutes later when he curled a free kick
from the angle of the penalty area just wide of
the post, but Tring were looking a little shaky
until the third goal arrived on 69 minutes. As
Butler chased a through ball, Leno came out of
his area to kick the ball clear. It only went as
far as Kinsley 40 yards out, though, and Kinsley
had the presence of mind and composure to send
the ball straight towards the empty net. Leno
scrambled back but could not keep the ball out of
the net and Tring were 3-1 up.
Hungerford fought back again, but Paul Hunt
missed a good chance on 72 minutes, shooting wide
from inside the six yard box, and Tring keeper
Lee Turney did well to tip over a long-range
effort from Dean Mildenhall to ensure that Tring
claimed the deserved win. |
