Two late goals saw Tring
conclude their encouraging run-in with another
win, which took their total to 20 points from
their last ten games. The win over Dorking
ensured that Tring held on to 10th place in
Division Two. The subtext to the game was the
race between Kevin Chakaodza and Alex Kinsley for
the title of top scorer, which took a few twists
and turns during the match.
For much of the first half, however, Tring were
pressed back in their own half and often
struggled to get the ball forward. Had Dorking's
finishing been up to scratch, the game could have
been buried by half time. On 20 minutes Stuart
White's shot at the near post brought a good save
out of Lee Turney, and soon after Craig Duffell's
glancing header from close range went just wide
of the far post. When Tring took the lead on 26
minutes, it was very much against the run of
play. Chakaodza received a pass from Jack Copson
with his back to goal, but a quick turn
despatched the last defender, and Chakaodza ran
on to slot the ball under the keeper to put him
level on goals with Kinsley.
Dorking should have been level on 35 minutes but
for one of the misses of the season. Kieran
Philpott beat the Tring offside trap to go clean
through. Philpott slid the ball past Turney, but
it came back off the base of the post. White
tried to blast the rebound home, but was
off-balance and skied it over the empty net from
inside the six yard box. However, within a minute
White had redeemed himself. Tring went to sleep
as a Dorking free kick was floated in from the
halfway line, and White struck a powerful volley
from the edge of the penalty area that gave
Turney no chance.
On 39 minutes Philpott set up White with another
clear shooting chance, but Turney somehow got a
hand to White's shot to turn it over the bar. In
first half stoppage time Duffell just failed to
connect with White's shot across the face of goal
as Tring limped to the break with the scores
still level.
Tring made a couple of necessary tactical changes
at half time, and the result was a second half
that was much more even. Dennis Fenemore headed
just over the bar from a corner on 57 minutes,
while Turney pulled off another good save to keep
out a long-range shot from Duffell a minute
later. Two minutes later Kinsley shot across the
face of goal when clean through, and Duffell
headed wide from Steve Coyle's cross on 65
minutes.
The game could have gone either way at this
point, but a decisive strike nine minutes from
time put Tring in the driving seat. Kinsley ran
to on to Steve Groves' long through pass, and
struck a low shot past the keeper to put Tring
ahead and himself back on top of the scoring
chart.
Three minutes later a long kick from Turney put
Chakaodza in, but his shot went just wide of the
far post. A delicious curling shot from Kinsley
was heading for the top corner until the keeper
pulled off a great save to keep it out. The win
was sealed by a goal in the last minute. Fenemore
won the ball in midfield and his pass put
Chakaodza clean through to score the goal that
would have brought him level with Kinsley again.
However, Chakaodza's shot was saved, and Kinsley
followed up to net the rebound for his 16th goal
of the season, ensuring that he was Tring's top
scorer for the third season running. |
