17/10/98: Ryman League Division Three
Tring Town 0 Hornchurch 0
Tring will take some encouragement from their second successive clean sheet, but this was a game they really should have won against a moderate Urchins side.
Early on in the game Tring, playing against the slope and the wind, were penned in their own half, but the only time their goal was threatened was on 17 minutes when Craig Bristow shot just wide from the edge of the area.
It took 25 minutes for Tring to get their first shot in, but it did produce a good save from the keeper. James Siddons provided the cross for Rob McKane, whose shot was heading for the top corner before being stopped by a spectacular flying save from Doug Lobb.
On 43 minutes Tring had another great chance when Victor Scott pounced on a fumble by Lobb, but his shot was blocked by a defender on the line, and Peter Owen skied the rebound over the bar. On the stroke of half time a long-range effort from Warren Lay went just over the bar.
Tring had the better of things in the second half, but once again clear-cut chances did not materialise. It was the visitors who came closest to scoring on 67 minutes when Tring were penalised for a back pass six yards out, but Keith McLoughlin produced an outstanding save to deny John Frostick from close range. Two minutes later when McLoughlin was caught off his line, Lay got back to clear off the line.
As the clock ran down, neither side looked like breaking the deadlock.
