7/11/98: Ryman League Division Three

Tring Town 1 Flackwell Heath 3

Tring started life after Danny McGrainaghan with another defeat, but this was an improved showing and a result that somewhat flattered the visitors.

Caretaker manager Doug Davies made some changes, including bringing in Youth team star Ben McGuire, and Tring had more possession in the opponents half than in any game this season. Chances were still difficult to come by, though. On 18 minutes Peter Owen made a good run on the edge of the area which resulted in a shooting chance for Victor Scott, which was well saved by the keeper. Two minutes later Adam Dale struck a free kick from 30 yards which went a foot over the bar. On 29 minutes McGuire went on a solo run before shooting just wide.

However, there was a blow for Tring when they went behind on the stroke of half time. A poor goal kick saw Tring caught short at the back, and Flackwell striker Jamie Charles was in the clear to shoot home from the edge of the area.

Tring almost got back on terms two minutes into the second half when Warren Lay tried to catch out the keeper with a quick free kick, but the keeper got across to save it, and Wayne Gladdy just failed to reach the rebound.

Tring's hopes were ended when they were twice caught on the break and conceded poor goals. On 57 minutes Charles outran Paul Turner to shoot home the second, and on 66 minutes Glen McGee was allowed to run unchallenged into the heart of the Tring box to slot home the third.

However, there was a consolation for Tring on 72 minutes when Owen set up Alex Kinsley, the Youth team's top scorer who had only just come off the bench, to fire home a fierce shot from 18 yards.
