17/11/98: Ryman League Division Three
Egham Town 7 Tring Town 2
There was still no joy for managerless Tring as they were torn apart by Egham in last night's league match despite having made a good start to the match.
Tring took the lead after 6 minutes when Ben McGuire got to the bye-line to deliver a cross which the keeper parried, and Colin Jones was on hand to net the rebound. However, Egham's quick counter-attacking style and their speedy forwards Clayton Whittle and Grant Watts were beginning to make Tring's defence look ponderous, and it was no surprise when Watts broke through on 26 minutes to shoot home the equaliser. Five minutes before the break, though, Tring were back in front when Ben Williams sent over an excellent cross to which Wayne Gladdy rose to head his first goal for the club. They couldn't hold on to the lead until half-time, though, as Egham equalised when Tring missed several opportunities to clear the ball and Darren Howell eventually stuck the ball home in injury time.
Egham took control in the second half, and went in front for the first time when Whittle collected a poor defensive header and shot home on 48 minutes. On 57 minutes Watts took advantage of more woeful defending to score the fourth, and ten minutes later Whittle was allowed the space on the edge of the area to curl home the fifth into the corner of the net. Seven minutes from time Howell broke away quickly and took on the whole of the Tring defence before netting the sixth, and deep into injury time Whittle completed his hat-trick as Keith McLoughlin was again left exposed.
