21/11/98: Ryman League Division Three

Ware 1 Tring Town 0

Tring certainly deserved something out of an excellent performance at Ware, but a single defensive lapse and their continuing lack of goals condemned them to another defeat.

Chairman Harry Bowden and vice-chairman Steve Green took charge of the team and changed the formation, pushing Tristan Heywood up front with Wayne Gladdy, and it seemed to be working as Tring made a bright start. Gladdy had his first sight of goal on 10 minutes when a ball from Peter Owen put him through, but the keeper dived to save the ball at his feet.

Within two minutes of that chance, the home side had taken the lead with their first real attack of the game. Warren Gravette rounded Paul Turner to give himself space to cross, and Dean Callcut met it at the near post for a simple goal.

Tring were on the back foot for the remainder of the first half, but came out strongly in the second half. On 48 minutes they had their best chance when Owen got clear on the right and should have gone on to shoot himself, but instead he pulled the ball back for Heywood, who couldn't make anything of it as it was slightly behind him, however Gladdy pounced on the loose ball and hit a shot just wide. Gladdy had another good chance four minutes later when he chased a long ball from Adam Dale and juggled the ball over defender, but again his shot went wide.

That was the story of the half as Tring had much the better of things and created a succession of half-chances, but failed to produce a serious save from the keeper. Heywood came the closest in the dying moments with a shot that missed the angle by inches, but it was not to be for Tring.

Team: McLoughlin, Lay, McGuire (Williams), Jones, Jashek, Turner, Wells, Dale, Owen, Gladdy (Kinsley), Heywood.
