20/2/99: Ryman League Division Three
Tring Town 0 Southall 2
Tring missed the chance to move off the bottom of the table as they slipped to a disappointing defeat to their former groundsharing partners.
Southall had much the better of the early exchanges, penning Tring in their own half, but the only real danger was on 10 minutes when Keith McLoughlin had to pull off an acrobatic dive to tip over a shot from Tommy Seymour.
Southall's keeper Lee Osborne wasn't brought into action until the 21st minute when he had to react sharply to cut out Gavin Hart's near post flick on from Liam Campbell's corner. A botched short corner routine four minutes later gave Southall a good chance as Tring were caught on the break. The ball was played through to Seymour who was all alone but dragged his shot wide of the far post.
The first goal arrived on 32 minutes. Tring failed to clear a cross, and the ball broke for Angelo Lione, who shot home from 10 yards.
For the remainder of the half and into the second half Tring had the bulk of the possession, but too often the play broke down at the 18 yard line before any chances were created.
It was even more frustrating, therefore, when Tring missed a golden opportunity to equalise on 62 minutes. A trip on Liam Campbell inside the box earned Tring a penalty, but Steve Hale struck a poor spot kick straight at keeper Osborne.
The game slipped further from Tring's grasp on 73 minutes following another quick Southall break. Jason Zazzera crossed, and Jose Pena had an easy chance from close range to tap home the second.
Tring created a few half-chances over the closing minutes, but rarely looked like getting back into the game.
