1/5/99: Ryman League Division Three
Epsom & Ewell 3 Tring Town 0
Tring brought the curtain down on their disastrous season in familiar fashion - with another defeat, and as a consequence they finish bottom of Division Three on goal difference from Kingsbury Town.
Tring were underthe cosh from the start and it was only some superb saves by keeper Lee Brown that prevented them from going behind earlier than they did. The first goal arrived on 28 minutes when a poor defensive header by Gary Bray gifted the ball to Joao Tome, who ran on and sidestepped Brown before slotting the ball home.
Tring had a good spell early in the second half, and should have equalised within two minutes of the restart when Steven Bainborough ran to the bye-line and pulled the ball back for Craig Foster, but Foster pulled his shot wide of the gaping goal.
Epsom's second goal on 59 minutes was somewhat against the run of play. Again it was Tome who was the recipient of a lucky rebound, and he ran clear before applying another expert finish.
Tring had another two near misses in the last 15 minutes, firstly when Paul Turner's pass set up Alex Kinsley, but the youth team's top scorer scuffed his shot, and two minutes later when Ben Williams went up with the keeper for a cross and got there first, but his effort his the post and rebounded back into the keeper arms. Tring conceded a third goal on the break eight minutes from time when Sean Grant picked up a misplaced pass inside his own half and ran through to complete his own solo effort.
Even then Tring might have got a consolation goal in the final minute, but Kinsley's shot hit the post.
