17/8/99: Ryman League Division Three

Tring Town 2 Southall 3

Tring are still looking for their first league point of the season despite leading for much of last night's game against Southall. The happiest man at the end of the night would have been former Tring boss Dennis Bainborough, who is now coach at Southall. Two of their three goals were scored by players he brought to Tring last season.

The first of the former Tring players to score was Craig Foster, who put the visitors in front after just five minutes. A defensive mix-up left Foster all alone to run onto a long ball, and he struck a shot from all of thirty yards over the static Tring keeper Lee Brown.

However, Tring were back on level terms after 15 minutes. A free kick was punched away by Southall keeper Ken Lavender, but only as far as Kevin Godbould, who lashed home the rebound first-time. Ten minutes later Tring went ahead. A cross from the right was flicked on by Matt Rawdon to Godbould at the far post, who made no mistake with his header and maintained his record of scoring all of Tring's goals so far this season.

Tring seemed to be holding onto their lead comfortably during the second half, but Southall came back into the game after a double substitution. They equalised on 65 minutes when Tring failed to deal with a corner, and Roger Moses got the decisive touch in a goalmouth scramble. Tring rarely looked like regaining their lead, and conceded the goal that left them empty-handed six minutes from time. With the defence pushing up, they were caught out by a ball over the top. The other former Tring player in the Southall side, striker Ben Williams, who had been one of the second half subs, showed a familiar turn of pace to sprint clear. He then produced the kind of finish that was rarely seen during his time at Tring, slotting the ball past the advancing Brown to secure the three points for his side.

Team: Brown, Underwood, Simpson, Dale, Turner, Asquith, Gerrard, McKane, Rawdon, Sangster (McGuire), Godbould (Kinsley).
