16/10/99: Ryman League Division Three
Camberley Town 1 Tring Town 0
After three successive wins, Tring were brought back down to earth with defeat at Camberley Town, one of the sides below them in the table.
Since last week's match Mick Vipond has added two further players to his squad in Neil Bartlett and Steve Boad, although both were confined to the bench for this game.
The goal that won the match came early on, from the home side's first attack on 11 minutes. A cross was headed clear to the edge of the area, but Stuart Holloway met the clearance with a tremendous first-time volley that gave even the in-form Keith McLoughlin no chance.
After a slow start to the match, Tring began to come into it and should have levelled on 20 minutes. Steve Bateman came in unmarked at the far post to meet a free kick, and his effort from within the six-yard box went across the face of goal and wide when it seemed easier to score. Tring came close again on 30 minutes when Marcus Davis hit a fine shot on the run which was tipped over the bar by the keeper.
However, they were lucky not to go into the break two down when a mix up between Paul Turner and McLoughlin presented Steve Larvin with a chance on 42 minutes which he put wide.
Camberley again should have increased their lead on the hour when hesitation in the Tring defence allowed Larvin a free header from close range but McLoughlin did well to tip it over the bar. But it was Tring who had the bulk of the possession in the second half, although they created disappointingly few chances from it.
On 76 minutes a chipped pass from Adam Dale allowed Davis a run in at the far post but the keeper saved his shot. On 83 minutes Eddie Gerrard had a great chance in front of goal but failed to make proper contact, and in the last minute Gerrard had an effort cleared off the line, which proved to be Tring's last hope of saving the game.
Team: McLoughlin, Underwood, Turner, Bateman (Simpson), Aldridge, Dale, Gerrard, McKane, Rawdon, Davis, Groves (Gladdy).
