6/11/99: Ryman League Division Three

Corinthian Casuals 1 Tring Town 2

Tring's fortunes continue to rise, as they followed up their midweek cup shock with their first away points, coming from behind to beat Corinthian Casuals, who had only lost two of their previous nine league games. The win moves Tring three places up the table to 15th, their highest position so far. Tring had Matt Rawdon back in the side after his midweek injury problems, but Marcus Davis was still on the sidelines.

Tring had a chance in the third minute when a cross from Paul Turner just eluded both Scott Walters and Rob McKane in front of goal, but for the most part Casuals had the better of the early exchanges. On 16 minutes Keith McLoughlin produced a great save to deny Cliff West from close range, but could do nothing on 28 minutes when Jamie White's shot took a wicked deflection to put the home side in front.

White could have increased Casuals' lead on 33 minutes when he went on a purposeful run past several Tring defenders, but hit his eventual shot over the bar. Tring then had a good spell, triggered by a shot on the turn from Eddie Gerrard which was well saved by the keeper. From the subsequent corner Paul Aldridge hit a shot which was cleared off the line, and Gerrard struck another shot which was heading for the top corner before it was deflected over by the head of Rawdon.

So Tring went into the break a goal down, but crucially they pulled level within two minutes of the restart. Walters' cross from the bye-line was met at the near post by Rawdon, whose effort hit the post, but Turner was on hand to bury the rebound.

The goal gave Tring the upper hand, and they continued to press forward, although often being let down by their final ball. A shot from outside the area by Walters forced the keeper into a good save on 67 minutes, but Tring made another breakthrough three minutes later. Adam Dale lofted a long free kick into the box, where Andy Simpson knocked it down for Rawdon, who slipped a shot under the keeper to put Tring in front.

A shot from Aldridge struck the bar on 77 minutes, and Gerrard had his shot saved after being put through by Rawdon's flick, as Tring threatened to increase their lead.

But instead they had to endure a nervous last five minutes as Casuals piled forward in search of an equaliser. An astonishing miss from Iain Waghorn, who followed up a parry from McLoughlin but somehow pulled his shot wide of the open goal, ensured that Tring took the points home.

Team: McLoughlin, Bartlett, Simpson, Bateman, Aldridge, Dale, Gerrard, McKane, Rawdon, Walters, Turner (Groves).
