21/8/99: Suburban League North Division

Tring Town 1 Kingsbury Town 3

Tring's newly-formed reserve side made their debut in the Suburban League with a home match against Kingsbury Town. With a number of players on holiday, manager Doug Davies had to field a very young side. They fell behind to a goal on the stroke of half-time that was generally acknowledged to have been offside, and eventually went down 3-1. Tring had only one sub available, and finished the game with ten men after an injury to Kieran Corcoran. The Tring goal was scored by Tom Brown. Overall, the performance was encouraging, and the team will get stronger.

Tring Town 3 Wingate & Finchley 5

A catalogue of defensive errors caused Tring's downfall in this game. Wingate's first goal was presented to them by debutant Steve Bateman and the Tring keeper getting in each other's way, and after just ten minutes Tring were 3-0 down. However, by half time Tring had pulled it back to 3-3 thanks to two goals from the other new boy Marcus Davis and a penalty from Will Deans. It looked odds on that Tring would go on to win it in the second half, but it was not to be, as Wingate punished more sloppy defending to add two further goals, and Tring were not able to generate much of a threat after Davis left the game after an hour

Ruislip Manor 0 Tring Town 6

Tring's teenage side - 12 out of the squad of 14 - gave a much older Ruislip Manor side a footballing lesson.

Quicker to the ball and playing with pace, Ruislip had no answer to the confident Tring side who led 4-0 at half time with goals from Will Deans, Alex Kinsley and Jamie Hall (2). Tring maintained their tempo after the break, adding two more from Ben McGuire and Kinsley.

Three weeks ago Tring had lost 2-1 to the same Ruislip side, so it was most encouraging to see the improvement. A result that some of their recent performances have deserved.

Team: Clark, Jeffrey, Everitt, Miskin, Harrhy, Walsh, Deans, McGuire, Barber, Hall, Kinsley. Subs: Walker, Gray, Coates.

Tring Town 2 Thatcham Town 2

Tring's young reserve side fought hard to gain a well-earned 2-2 draw against a strong Thatcham side. A fluent first half saw the home side recover from going 1-0 down to score twice through Sean Sangster and an own goal. However, the 2-1 lead could easily have been doubled if Tring had managed to convert some of the chances they created.

The second half was a different story, though, and Tring had to defend resolutely as Thatcham swarmed forward, equalising with 15 minutes remaining. Tring goalkeeper David Clark took the man-of-the-match honours for some outstanding saves during the game.

Tring Town 3 Chesham United 4

The reserves produced a performance of high quality against top-of-the-table Chesham United. Fielding several Youth Team players, Tring produced a first-half display of skill and determination to lead 2-1 at the break. A goal behind, a superb solo run and finish from Danny Gray followed by a header from Sean Sangster gave Tring the interval lead.

The experienced Chesham side responded after the break to lead 4-2, but a well-struck free kick from Steven Harrhy brought the score back to 4-3. The match ended with Tring attacking; the Chesham keeper saving with his feet to prevent Sangster equalising in the final minute. An excellent performance, although a disappointing result!

Berkhamsted Town 5 Tring Town 1

For the second week running Tring's young reserve side met a top-two side. Last week it was Chesham, this week Berkhamsted. A determined first half display saw Tring gain the initiative, and turn round with a 0-0 scoreline at the break. However, a combination of poor defending and a far more positive performance from Berko meant that the title chasers ran out 5-1 winners. Tring's resistance flickered briefly when Michael Courtney's strike brough them back in the game at 1-2, but inexperience took its toll in the final 20 minutes of the game.

21/3/00: Abingdon United 2 Tring Town 2
25/3/00: Thatcham Town 2 Tring Town 3

Tring's reserves faced two difficult away trips in four days to Abingdon United and Thatcham. However, displays of determination and some quality finishing brought a haul of four points.

At Abingdon, Tring took the lead through a WILL DEANS header from a corner, only for the opposition to equalise shortly after half time. A spectacular finish by ALEX KINSLEY from a through ball by Sean Sangster put Tring in the lead again, but a late equaliser robbed them of two points.

A poor first half display at Thatcham saw Tring go a goal down, but they struck back with goals from CRAIG HAWLEY, KINSLEY (pen) and another superbly struck free kick from STEVEN HARRHY. A goal in injury time could not deny Tring the 3-2 win.

The squad gets younger with every game! It was Tring U-21 at Abingdon; with Craig Hawley the only 'over-age' player at Thatcham. With youth team players Terry Slaughter (goalkeeper), Wayne Barber and Danny Gray included, thefuture looks bright for the red and white!! (report by Howard Cowley - reserve team Manager)

Tring Town 2 Leighton Town 0
Tring's young reserve side produced one of their best performances of the season to beat a side from the top six in the league. A positive start to the game saw Tring dominate, and it was no surprise when Sean Sangster opened the scoring with a shot from the edge of the penalty area. Tring's fluent football soon brought a second goal, Jamie Hall heading home a Danny Oliver cross. Tring had to work hard to protect their two-goal interval lead, but defended calmly and strongly under pressure whilst causing Leighton all sorts of pressure on the counter-attack. Both Alex Kinsley and Jamie Hall forced fine saves from the Leighton keeper and Ben McGuire hit the post. In the Tring goal David Clark made an outstanding save to keep a clean sheet. The three points saw Tring move away from the re-election zone and gave further indication of the progress the side has made this season. Team: Clark, Oliver, Brett, Woolfrey, Barber, Hill, Walsh, Hawley, McGuire, Kinsley, Sangster. Subs: Moriarty, Peck, Jeffrey.
