JUDGEMENT DAY 2003

Saturday 27 September 2003 and a surprise was in store for the residents of Dyffryn village.

The afternoon started crisply with fine, bright weather as the locals met for the annual weigh-in of their horticultural produce, particularly the legendary ONIONS grown in this beautiful valley.

Initially however, attention was given over to culinary skills with many delicious WELSH CAKES being presented for judging.

Last year's winner, Val Williams, was invited to cast the first vote. Blindfolded judges tasted without visual assistance to ensure impartial results.

So, difficult decisions all around, but the adult winner was finally announced as JOAN BIRD and the junior winner as ABIGAIL BIRD.
JOAN BIRD receives the first prize.

Abigail's parents collect her award.

Next came the MARROW awards with the junior winner being JOE HOLLOWAY.

And the junior winner of the ONION competition was
ANNA HOLLOWAY

In the adult section of the MARROWS, it was a close run battle between the eventual winner, MAT HOLLOWAY and the runner up Jayne Frampton.
In third place was Mervyn Greenwood.

Finally came the winner of the adult ONION competition and the joy is obvious on the face of the new champion, HUGH BIRD. His fine onion with a good, clean bottom weighed in at 2.285 kilos.

HUGH had finally toppled the previous winner of 3 consecutive years.

A surprise indeed for all the Dyffryn residents, the king finally removed from his throne.

The new name of HUGH BIRD will be proudly engraved upon the presentation trophy for all to see.

A young visitor enjoyed the proceedings enormously.

Warm thanks were given to the hosts, MAT & JANE for their hospitallity and fine foods.
