Burrington is roughly 540 ft above sea level and situated about a mile to the west of the beautiful Taw valley - "Tarka Country", in North Devon. It is a quiet village with a small Post Office / shop, a primary school, floodlit Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) - and a thatched pub - The Barnstaple Inn.  For those who love the outdoors this is the place to be - we are surrounded by it - to the north is Exmoor, to the south is Dartmoor. The North Devon coast is renowned for its rugged beauty and clean beaches. For further information including accommodation etc., see the various links below. Free car park.

The oak tree symbolises the one that stands in the village square. Said to be about 500 years old, recent major surgery has given the tree a new lease of life. In the 'Alphabet of Parishes' project based at the Beaford Arts Centre the village is represented by the letter O - for Oak. A pottery plaque designed and made by local potter Harry Juniper, commemorating the centenary of the Parish Council and bearing a picture of the oak tree, is displayed in the porch of the Parish Hall.

"BURRINGTON, a pleasant village, 4 miles N.W. by W. of Chulmleigh, has in its parish 5330 acres of land, including Halsbury, Callard, Northcote, and other scattered farms. The parish had 1244 souls when the census was taken in 1841, but they included 196 visitors at the village fair, on Trinity Monday. The Hon. Newton Fellowes has a manor and estate here, but a large part of the parish belongs to the Rev. P. Johnson, L.W. Buck, Esq., R. Chichester, Esq., and the Rev. James Buckingham, B.C.L. The latter is patron and incumbent of the vicarage, valued in K.B. at £13. 11s. 3d., and in 1831 at £301. The tithes were commuted in 1838, the vicarial for £260, and the rectorial for £308. 10s. The latter belong to Mr. Tout. The Church (Holy Trinity), is an ancient structure, with a tower and six bells, and a handsome screen. The Wesleyans and Baptists have small chapels here. The poor have £2. 10s. yearly from Pyncombe's and Tossel's charities." [From White's Devonshire Directory (1850)]
[The K.B. stands for King's Book or Libra Regis, which was begun by Henry VIII in 1535 to value the church lands he 'acquired'. Subsequently the value of church land has been kept in a series of documents called Valor Ecclesiasticus.]

The Exeter to Barnstaple railway line (the 'Tarka Line', up to 9 trains per day either way, seven days a week) - the nearest station to Burrington (and the one which stops most frequently) is at Kings Nympton. The line is currently operated by Wessex Trains, Tel: 08457 484950.  For buses (Exeter to Barnstaple, DevonBus 325) - there are two buses either way Monday - Friday, one either way on Saturdays, none on Sundays.  The bus service is operated by First Red Bus, Tel: 01271 345444.
