Crazy Horse - 1840 to 1877
Crazy Horse (literally means "His-Horse-Is-Crazy" or "His-Horse-Is-Spirited") was a Native American war leader of the Oglala Lakota. He took up arms against the U.S. Federal government to fight against encroachments on the territories and way of life of the Lakota people, including leading a war party at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in June 1876.
On June 17 1876, Crazy Horse led a combined group of approximately 1,500 Lakota and Cheyenne indians
in a surprise attack against Brigadier General George Crook's force of 1,000 cavalry and infantry, and allied 300 Crow and Shoshone warriors in the Battle of the Rosebud. The battle, although not substantial in terms of human losses, delayed Crook's joining with the 7th Cavalry under George A. Custer, which contributed to Custer’s subsequent defeat at the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
