Cahors

The bridge at Cahors

The centre of a lesser known wine region in southern France.

Le Caylar

Le Caylar in the Massif Central

Le Caylar is a village on the old N9 in the Massif Central region of southern France. It is now bypassed so most travellers would not see this strange tree sculpture in the village centre opposite a handy bar. The roof over the sculpture was added around 1992.

Chartres

Chartres cathedral

Chartres lies south-west of Paris on the N10 road to Tours and makes a great place for an overnight stop before, or after, boarding a channel ferry. It is famous for its cathedral with two (different) spires.

Garabit

Viaduct de Garabit

This is the Viaduct de Garabit which lies near the old N9 road through the Massif Central. It was built by Gustave Eiffel during the years 1882 to 1884, which pre-dates the Eiffel tower by five years or so, and was the first major steel construction in France. The new dual carriageway bypasses this, and many other interesting spots, so travellers now have to make a particular effort to view some of the sites in this region of France.

La Lemme

Waterfall on the N5 road to Geneva

On the N5 over the mountain going from France to Geneva is this picturesque spot with a restaurant overlooking the waterfall.

Minerve

The town of Minerve

The small town of Minerve is situated near Carcassone and is the centre of one of the lesser known wine regions of France, called Minervoir. It has an interesting history based on a terrible siege in 1210 when over a hundred townsfolk were burned alive.

The French Pyrenees

The French Pyrenees

A typical scene on the French side of the Pyrenees.

The Saleve

The Saleve mountain

The Saleve is the French mountain which looks over Geneva. On a clear day there is a fantastic view from the restaurant looking towards lake Geneva. As the photograph shows the locals use this mountain to launch their hang-gliders. You can use a cable-car to get up to the restaurant.

Gorge du Tarn

View from the Point Sublime

The Gorges du Tarn (a spectacular canyon) is becoming a major tourist attraction because of its stunning beauty. This is the view from the Point Sublime facing south-west towards Millau.

Typical village scene in the Gorge. I believe this is the village of La Malene, but I cannot be sure because I failed to make notes on this particular trip. In this part the depth of the gorge is 500 metres; its very impressive, especially from the viewpoint known as Point Sublime.

Gorge du Tarn at La Malene

One of many short tunnels The small winding road has plenty of these short tunnels. If you visit the gorge then be very careful because the road is small and the locals drive quickly. The gorge can be completed in an hour or so, but you'd miss the magic of the scenery. I suggest that you have lunch and allow three or four hours.

There are plenty of scenes worthy of a photograph stop in the Gorge du Tarn, but some of them are not always easy to get to. There is inevitably a tree or cliff in the way of the perfect photograph; but, its lots of fun trying to get it.

Vendome

Vendome on the Loir river

Vendome lies on the banks of the Loir river, not the Loire, and on the N10 road from Paris to Tours.
