The Camas Prairie Railroad takes its name from the fertile prairie called the Camas Praire in Northern Idaho. The rich agricultural land and lumber from the surrounding forests attracted railroads to the area even though the terrain made construction difficult.

For many years the railroad has been operated by jointly Burlington Northern (Northern Pacific) and Union Pacific. This resulted in a diverse mix of power for a shortline operation. In 1998 the line was sold and now Camas Prairie Railnet runs the 4 lines centred on Lewiston, Idaho.
