Barstow, California

Barstow is a major BNSF hub where trains from all over western USA congregate before the trip eastwards across the Mojave desert to Needles and beyond. UP trains also pass through Barstow and branch of the mainline at Daggert, 7 miles east of Barstow, where the trains head north-east through Las Vegas, NV to Salt Lake City. This makes for some busy railfanning and plenty of variety.

Most of the pictures in the galleries below have been taken from near the old depot. There are several motels and fast food restaurants in Barstow along old Route 66 which passes through the centre of the town. These are reached by crossing the bridge from the depot over the tracks.
