Cool numberplates !

The Law!

As of some imminent time the exact date of which I can’t remember it has become law to show the name of the dealer you bought them off on the bottom of the number plates. If you buy them from my dad’s shop you’ll have “THOMPSON’S OF MACCLESFIELD LTD” on the bottom and if you buy them from Halfords you’ll have – well you get the idea. I don’t know the situation with exactly how official the “dealer” must be……..

Despite what many people say, and despite compelling arguments I’ve read stating otherwise, I’m now totally convinced that it is not possible to have legal stick on numberplates. There are several reasons, but Keith at Thompson’s has actually shown me the official documents so I do stand corrected about this.

Personally I don’t think that it will be a problem – that you won’t get stopped – but nevertheless, it is something else for plod to moan at so I can’t really see the point, as we stand, unless some new info comes to light!

Mail Keith for any specific requirements or information you might need!

He’ll sort you out whatever you’re after and is very clued up about what you can and can’t legally do, so I do recommend you speak to him before you buy something and risk a fine!

Some cool numberplate idea’s for your Caterham 7:

7 CAT – available for about £13000 + VAT (!)

It is quite a nice idea to get yourself a nice personalised numberplate for your 7.

I bought V11 UFO for just £400 including transfer and I love it! It refers, as you may or may not have noticed, to 7 in roman numerals (VII)!

I am soooooo tempted to print up a “dodgy” numberplate (see our family business pages for details www.thompsonsltd.co.uk) but I understand the legal implications of displaying VII UFO instead of V11 UFO! I don’t want to get “rozzered”!

You could look at the DVLA’s select registration page at http://www.dvla-som.co.uk/homepage/home.html and choose yourself a nice number! I think some decent ones would be:

V11 (then your initials)

Or

K7 (as in K series then your initials)

Or

C7 (as in Caterham 7 then your initials)

Or

K18 (as in K series 1.8 then your initials)

Or what about

R500 (then your initials!)

Even

K190 (as in 190bhp for SLR cars?)

This page might be a bit obvious but I spent ages thinking about numberplates and decided that whilst I’d love 7CAT or 7SLR or something, I needed something cheaper so instead searched about for an interesting plate at a realistic price.

Remember that most of these “brokers” who offer the prefix plates like V11UFO will simply take the DVLA price and add £150 to it before offering it to you! I’d recommend purchase only from DVLA unless you find something spectacular you just MUST have. I noted when I looked that DVLA has virtually no 7 specific A1 or A7 plates, which I found interesting. Perhaps they’ve sold them all or maybe they have just sold them to these dealers!
