Caterham Racecars
Introduction
Caterham offer the Super
Seven as a fully fledged racing car as well as the more conventional road car.
There are several one make championships run by the company each year and below
are the prices and specifications of the cars sold that are eligible to
compete.
It is absolutely possible
to buy a racer and add the parts needed to legally use the car on the road
– ie lights, indicators etc… Having
done some sums and taken into account that the residual values will possibly be
slightly weaker we are not sure it is the best route to take but if you do a
lot of trackwork it might be an option worth seriously considering.

Notes
Clearly the cars are good
value. They do, however, have some limitations in terms of ultimate spec but
these are well justified. For example, none of the cars sport carbon panels –
this would be a £1200 extra. If you are 95% on track you probably wouldn’t want
a £600 carbon nose to smash, either, so this is probably a plus point!
Notice the roller barrel
throttles on the SLR – I suspect that you will also get the specially
programmed MBE ECU unit rather than the “standard” MEMS system on this car,
hence the 200bhp output. It isn’t clear if these cars will have “XPOWER”
branded K series but I would have thought they will have, unless they use up
the remaining non “X” K series on the racer’s this year.
Bear in mind that you do
get only one seat in the spec as standard. You get quite a lot of roll-cagey
bits as standard too, which you might not want if you’re using it on the road a
lot. It will be highly likely that the deleting of, say, the £400 rollcage from
the SLR will NOT result in a £400 saving off the price so be careful when
speccing the car!
