PLAYING THE WARGAME

I am afraid that no more players can be accepted at the moment, but watch this space for information on the start of a new game. Meanwhile, you can download the rules. Only contact me when you have read the rules, and are sure this is your sort of game.

This is an abstract wargame, taking place in the world of Varna, (which is described elsewhere on this web site). Varna is a Bronze Age society, with some magic use (Flying Carpet units, for instance).

Diplomacy and military might are the main options. Much of the interest focuses on the VARNA TIMES, the newspaper to which players contribute their own fog of war, and set the flavor of the nation they are playing.

The rules are long, but you only have to master the bits that are important to you. If you want to know the chance to succeed in any action you take, you can deduce this by close examination of the rules. If you are more a "seat of the pants" person, you can ignore all the rules about how battles are resolved, and just look at the lists of orders to find out how to do what you want to.

Here are the basics you need to do to start playing:

FIRST BUDGET

Set a diplomatic budget.

Hire and name your leaders. Give their locations, which can be anywhere in the world. Any leader hired in your own nation can immediately hire units (troops or ships), and will start the game in command of those units. Give the number of troops to be hired, for instance LF 10 means you have hired 10 Light Foot.

On the first Budget Day only, units have no raise cost; you just pay maintenance for whatever you hire.

TURNS

Having done the Budget, you can then go straight on to your first turn.

Your nation can issue up to 5 Nation Orders. Up to 5 of your leaders can issue one order each.

Ships must end their turn in a nation.

Any unit entering a hostile nation will stop moving and fight. All nations not friendly to you are hostile. There are no neutrals, only enemies...

The VARNA TIMES will be issued after I have resolved everyone's first turn. You should use spare Nation Orders to "issue rumor" and make the VARNA TIMES interesting (confusing).

If you find yourself wanting to give an order that is not listed, e-mail me, and we can negotiate. If anything confuses you, ask me for clarification.

If you are still interested in playing Varna the Wargame after reading the above, just e-mail me.

More detailed hints are available and there is a FAQs sheet.

These are a few of the most commonly used orders, and a list of available units.
