Velanera Times January 2005 Momentous world events make this all seem a little trivial so I'll be brief... Yes, I am still alive and well, enjoying life and reasonably rude health here in the Lake District as the photo below from Boxing Day shows. It doesn't show just how soft the snow & ice really were (nor that we rarely get conditions like these, either)! The other photos, taken from www.keswick.u-net.com - Ann Bowker’s “Mad about Mountains” site, show Keswick under very different conditions (no, it’s not my car and, yes, Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite Lake are quite separate lakes normally)!
If you've been wondering what else I'm up to these days, here's a quick summary. I continue to find regular, interesting and enjoyable work from a variety of very different sources.
At J&G Inns, for example, year on year, double-digit growth at the Brackenrigg Inn means that we've been able to branch out and acquire Warkworth House - an historic small hotel in Northumbria and the second property in the group.
Despite being very busy with work in 2004, I also managed to get out and about on the nearby crags & hills fairly regularly (happily leading VS 4c routes on sight, if that means anything)! I led walks in Italy for HF Holidays at Bonassola, the resort where I’d carried out a recce a year earlier. It was very rewarding to see guests & leaders enjoying the walks I'd designed … and I looked at a map only once in the whole week!
I stood down as a trustee of the charity RedR / IHE at the AGM marking the end of my second term of office. Now, more than ever, the world of humanitarian relief needs the services they provide. The whole organisation is in good shape and, I'm sure, will meet the latest challenges with true professionalism and dedication to serving others. Paul |
