Vi and Brian Nichols live in a small village on the edge of Leicestershire.
Vi had her first Elkhound in 1970 and bred her first litter in 1972 from then on she was hooked. Some more litters followed with Vi keeping a dog or bitch from each litter until around 1980 when there were 5 Elkhounds of mixed sexes (all in the name of Lewis). Her late husband died in 1977 and she married Brian in 1981. Brian took on the Elkhounds as well as Vi.
She had been showing with moderate success from 1976. After they were married Brian and his daughter took an interest in showing and with his influence the kennel started going from strength to strength. The kennels first CC (Barlestone Dane) was won in 1980, first Champion Barlestone Elga in 1983 (campaigned by Brian). Since then they have bred 8 GB Champions of which 4
were also Irish Champions, I Irish, 1 African and 1 New Zealand. They have also campaigned a Norwegian import bitch to her Championship and in 1999 their American import to his Championship. They have imported over the last 10 years from Norway 1 male and two females and in 1998 Am Ch. Windy Cove
Jesica Kruz’n Kash came over.
Until Barlestone Crystal came along her dam Barlestone Wanda had won the most CC’s (16) with 1 Hound Group and BOS at LKA 1989. Barlestone Crystal to date has won 26 CC’s, Hound Group at Crufts, East of England and her latest was Manchester 1999 where she also took Best Opposite Sex in Show out of around 22,000 dogs. She has also won 4 times Gr 2 and GR 3 & Gr 4. Barlestone Crystal holds the record for being the only Elkhound to win Best in Show at the British Elkhound Club, Elkhound Association of Scotland and Elkhound Association of Ireland in the one year, she was also top UK Elkhound 1995/96/97.
