The Mural that was in Weston on Trent

The mural was constructed by a team of volunteers (and passers-by) after considerable planning by the village hall committee (and after much debate in the village and the parish council). The volunteers included Nev Ball, Jessica Briggs, Margaret Briggs, Victoria Brown, Joe Clark, Martin Collins, Pauline Collins, Karen and Lee Cooper, John Dawson, Trudie Ford, Marianne King, Genie Krakowska Smart and Natalie Smart, Daniel Sutcliffe, Rory Sutcliffe, Victuallers and Jenny Yale. The mural was demolished in December 2001 as part of the village hall extension project.

A publicity photo for A Ladd in Weston the 1999 Weston Pantomie. Featuring the mural and Charlotte Charles as Aladdin.

The mural was chosen by the village hall committee from one of three designs by Marianne King. The mural was constructed on a wall prepared by Neville Ball and the design was then drawn in pencil. It shows various landmarks within the village suitably arranged to fit the various features on the wall. On the left is the village green and the nearby pub (the Old Plough before it was repainted in 2000), The central feature is a blue tractor and to the right is Weston Hall (Coopers Arms) schematically represented as an air vent. On the right is one of the huts used for animals on the land beside Rectory Mews. The sheep are based on those on Birds farm and the horses are a feature of our rural life here in south Derbyshire.
