The May Darling interview

Do you watch the BBC's Changing Rooms? Take a close look at the credits and you will see the Producer is May Darling. May lives in a large executive cottage on The Green by the Pinfold opposite The Old Plough with her husband Hugh and children Wendy, John and Michael and a Swedish au pair. Panto 2000 managed to interview May in one of her rare moments of rest.

Can you us an overview of your career so far?
(Joshua Brown, Derbyshire)

"I studied media, trained at the beeb then did a two year stint as Assistant Producer on Newsnight before getting this job. I really love it but the hours are horrendous. The show has offices in London and Manchester because we go all over the country and one team could not make a show each week but we only have one Director and Producer. So I have a great deal of travelling to do and spend 3 or 4 nights a week away from home. I am also involved in syndicating the program abroad. We are putting a great deal of effort in selling it to the USA. All this is far from ideal for family life but necessary for the job."

What do the rest of the family think?
(Eileen and Baz)

"My husband was very supportive to begin with. But I think he is getting fed up with leaving messages on Post-It stickers on the fridge door and seems to spend more and more time in The Plough with his friends. I do my best to make time to be with the children but it is very difficult. So I have employed an au-pair." Clearly the job is testing the strength of the relationships within this family to the limit.

After the interview I met Wendy outside the house. I asked her what she thought of her mother's job. "She likes it but I see so little of her if I disappeared into the ether I'm not so sure she'd notice." Clearly there is some resentment there. Let's hope it's not really that bad.

Do you have favourite designers?
(Karen & Lee, Weston)

No.

What are your tips for children who want to get ahead in Show Business?
Work hard and focus completely on what you want to do.
