Higher Still

For official and up-to-date documents on the new exam visit the Web Site at www.higher-still.org.uk - but beware! not only will you need Adobe Acrobat to read the main documents, but at 348pages for just one of them, the pages take a while to download. These hefty tomes also contain much that any given individual, who is not a teacher, will find irrelevant and surplus to their requirements. (N.B. If you do download it for the new Higher, the information begins on pg 259!)

We will try to keep you up-to-date on this site with the parts you have to know.

Here is the new exam in tabular form:

FOLIO 1. Writing 12.5%
2. Oral/Aural 12.5% 40%
3. Specialist Study 15%
EXAM 1. 2 Interpretations 30% (1 1/2 hours)
2. Analysis/Appreciation 30% 60%
a)Unseen text analysis (1 1/2 hours)
b)Essay on prepared texts

LATEST NEWS! According to the Herald on February 10th 1999, English (along with Administation, Computing, Fashion & Textiles, and Art & Design) is not ready for the June deadline. The Higher Still Liaison Group is meeting today (Feb10) to discuss the implications. In common with Scots' divided stance on everything, some schools which feel they are ready may go ahead with the new courses in June. You will have to check with each school to find out its position. Similar delays happened with Standard Grade and the government have apparently learned no lessons.

We shall keep you posted!
