Over two million non-biodegradable toner
cartridges are thrown away annually in the UK, each one weighing about 4lbs and made
mostly of plastic.
A growing number of companies are now selling cartridges
which have been remanufactured or are refillable. Most types of cartridge can be
remanufactured after use. This involves being sent to a factory where they are completely
dismantled and cleaned, any worn parts are replaced, and the drum either re-coated or
replaced. They are then refilled with fresh toner, tested and sold with a guarantee. Many
distributors of remanufactured cartridges claim that they can give a better print quality
and produce up to 20% more prints than the original cartridge. The recycled cartridge can
also be cheaper than a new one.
Refillable cartridges usually have a modified high-yield
drum and come with several spare bottles of toner, allowing the cartridge to produce up to
five times the number of copies produced by a standard cartridge. Some of the companies
listed below also sell bottles of ink refills for Hewlett Packard and Epson ink-jet
printers.
