Improper Grown-up

[ Back To Grrls Articles ]

by Beccy age 23 and a bit

It's strange to think that so many of my friends are getting married at twenty-one. I don't feel ready to even live with someone. Life-time commitment seems so grown-up and sensible, and I just don't think I'm ready to get that matching dinner service just yet.

I'm still reliving my student days, with postcards decorating my walls. I'm not familiar with the names of kitchen manufacturers, or the different types of carpets available.
I'm renting, and proud of it!

I have the freedom to move, and grow and change as fast as I can keep up with myself. I feel so young and inexperience, and I have gone away to university! I am only just beginning to understand who I am, and what I could be capable of doing.

Seventeen year olds who think that they know exactly who they are, and where they are going are  just kidding themselves. Seventeen years of life surely can't teach you everything?

But is a matching dinner service a sign of adulthood? Is til death us do part the rite of passage one must take to ensure the transition from teenager to twenty-something?
I'm not ready to give up my crushes, my passion for shoe-shopping, or my unhealthy obsession to anything sparkly.

So, I'm sorry if I don't fit your idea of adulthood, I'm off to play on my n64.
