I just about made it
through The 6th Sense and nearly had to leave the room in Scream.
Yes, when it comes to horror films I’m a dead loss ( the joke is poor, but it
was dying to be made – alright I’ll stop now!).
But my lack of
experience when it comes to teen slashers and horror classics didn’t seem to
stop me from enjoying this year’s top horror spoof, Scary Movie.
The film is a parody
of a parody – a rip-off not only of genuine horrors like “I Know what you
did last summer” and “The Blair Witch Project” but of spoofs like Scream
and other films too. In fact, it’s a ‘blink and you miss ‘em’
spectacular with jibes at every recent successful film genre. For example, a
group of teens are played by 20 - 30 year olds, they discover there is a killer
amongst them and have to find out who it is, they think they’ve killed a local
farmer by running him over, there are some great sequences using the slow-mo
special effects from The Matrix and the obligatory classic from The Blair Witch
Project (you know, the one with the bobble hat – yes you do). And so it goes
on.
This is a clever
film. But that wouldn’t be enough for it to rate as enjoyable. And it is
enjoyable. The humour is not subtle – a beheaded cheer leader continues
to taunt their murderer before he dumps her, still sarcastically nagging and
walks off in disgust, the female lead (Buff) gets shot up against the ceiling
on a torrent of cum, the murderer gets high with the teens at a frat party and
there is a great scene where they take-off the current Budweiser ad. Am I making
this sound funny? It’s more than usually difficult to do this film justice
because its gags are so visual. Think Naked Gun meets The Exorcist
and you’re there.
If you like horror
movies this film will really make you laugh, it’ll bring back all the most
ridiculous of the gory scenes you love to shudder at. If you don’t like horror
movies but fancy a laugh you’ll still enjoy it. Helps if you’re sense of
humour is just a little bit sick.
Happy Halloween.
