GrrlsInRock Writer Sarah interviews Twist

TWIST WANT TO BREAK THE MISCONCEPTION THAT GIRLS SUCK AT MUSIC RELATED ISSUES, WHICH IS BASICALLY A LOAD OF BOLLOX AND WE ALL KNEW THAT ANYWAY.  BUT FOR U SEXIST PIG BOYS OUT THERE AND I KNOW THAT U ARE READING, GET A LOAD OF TWIST.
When you were young, were you all very interested in music?
Of course we were!
What kind of bands/artists inspired you to form a band?
Madonna, Nirvana, David Bowie, etc.
Did you have musical heroes?
Not really, Emma's heroes were Tom Jones and Madonna
When did you start playing the instruments you play in the band?
Emma- 14 1/2, Vanessa- 14, Leanne- 13 1/2, Lisa 14
How did you all know each other?
Emma and Leanne knew each other from school, then Vanessa joined because she rehearsed at the same studios as them and they they sacked the old bass player and got Lisa.
What were the early stages of Twist like?
Can't remember, we were pissed, but according to Mike (the manager) rehearsing and recording.
What happened at your first ever gig?
We all stood there like a bunch of stiffs, but the gig was sold out.
Were there any problems you encoutered when you were first setting the band up?
No.
When did things start happening for the band?
What has been your greatest achievement so far?
Releasing three singles and an album and playing the astoria with Muse and Coldplay.  And surviving the past year.
How did you feel about Kerrang! magazine doing a piece on the band?  Did you expect to attract that kind of interest?
We thought it was really cool, to have that kind of attention.  We were hoping to and luckily we did
What would you describe your music as?
Very powerful, discordent, loud, eratic- but sometimes we are very peaceful.
How do you write songs?
We come up with a riff then we fan around it and then Emma comes up with vocal melody and words.
On the mini-album, which is your favourite song and why?
Hey You- 'cause it was most fun to record.
Are the songs written about personal expericences you have had?
Sometimes.
What advice would you give to girls who want to get into music?
Don't bother unless you're willing to give up your life.
Did you ever imagine that you'd end up in a band as a career?
That's what we set out to do.
What would each of you have done otherwise?
Joined a band.
What has been your favourite gig so far?
Bedford- Esquires.
What is the band up to in the next few months?
Releasing a limited edition single around October-November- with a small tour to follow.  And releasing the album in America with a 2 month tour.
