The Event: Aliens from across the galaxy join together to raise money for Children in Need at...

Space Station Pudsey!

In January 1996 I was asked to produce some props for a BBC Children In Need Event. The event was to be held in an office complex somewhere in Swindon.  It was decided to turn a humdrum office complex into an intergalactic space station for the day of Children In Need. The organizers required two full size Daleks and two Cybermen to inhabit "Space Station Pudsey" for the night. These, along with other Sci-Fi memorabilia and celebrities, would form the main draw for the public to come along and donate money to this very worthy cause.

The Daleks were produced to a very tight budget. Both would have to be operational and movable and cost no more than £ 300 each. They also had to be as accurate as possible as they would be appearing alongside a former doctor. This site details some of the work involved in constructing the Daleks and is dedicated to all those involved in the Children in Need appeal.

If you have ever tried to make your own Dalek you will appreciate that it is no trivial task. I had to produce two machines in around six months, all in my ‘spare’ time!
