Skirt Section

Due to budgetary restrictions all of the hemispheres on the skirt section had to be made by hand. To purchase the 56 hemispheres required per dalek would have taken half the budget!. A 95mm diameter hemisphere was found in a scrap yard and copied in order to produce a Mould from which the required number of hemispheres could be cast.

The fiberglass skirt was mounted on an 18mm MDF base which was surrounded by a rubber skirt to hide the 3" wheels underneath.

Underside view showing the skirt section freshly pulled from the Mould and mounted on the MDF base. The heavy duty casters made light work of moving the Dalek.
Skirt sanded and ready for painting. Note the positions for the hemispheres were marked in advance on the Mould enabling them to be easily positioned at the next stage.
56 Moulded hemispheres. Cleaned and sanded, primed, and painted. They were then filled with foam and a wooden block to enable them to be bolted to the skirt.
Skirt section sprayed and balls being fitted... A lot of balls being fitted.

I used car spray paint for everything. The gray used was primer, it looked the part and was cheap at £1 a can! Total paint bill - £15!
