Stag Hill Archers Seek Information ?
A
recent discussion amongst a few of the (currently) longest serving members
of the Stag Hill Archers (The University of Surrey Archery Club) as to who
had been President when left us pushing our collective memories to 1997, with
word of mouth allowing us to reach no further than 1995. A year or so before
this, I had a brief conversation at a competition with someone who had been
a member of the club when he was at university at Surrey. (He was dismayed
at how many buildings had gone up and how much the trees had grown, since
he graduated).
All this prompted me to wonder exactly how long the club had been running,
who had founded it and so forth. The few leads that I found petered out depressingly
quickly, although I must say a word of thanks to Brian Purnell (the Secretary
of the Southern Counties Archery Society) for confirming that the club was
certainly in existence in 1978. Sally Edie, who anybody who has taken part
in a sport at Surrey will surely remember, has also been very helpful. She
has kept an archive of a now obsolete Phys. Ed. Journal of the University,
which allowed me to go as far back as 1973, which we believe is when Archery
first made it's appearance at the University. Whether this was one the club
which I know as the Stag Hill Archers was founded is hard to say though.
If you were once a member of the Stag Hill Archers, or know someone who was,
no matter when, please contact us with any memories that you might have. If
there is enough interest then we could consider organising a reunion of Alumni
Archers. We would also like to organise an archive of some kind, with photos
etc. If the club was founded in 1978, then this year is our Silver Jubilee.
If it was 1973 we've missed it then we'll just have to make the 30th a lot
