County of Surrey Archery Association

Autumn Longbow Championships
held on Saturday 7th September 2002

Our Second two-way Western of the year was held on the grounds of Woking Archery Club. We had a most pleasant day's Archery, with a gentle breeze blowing straight down the field and intermittent sunshine.

We offer our thanks to all those members of Woking Archery Club who made the day possible both as field party and in the kitchen. Lawrence Braithwaite supervised the marking out of the field assisted by Colin Madelin, and this was made much easier due to the White Line marking on the field carried out earlier in the week by Terry Sandford, Andrea Gales and others. Other County archers also offered to help on the day as soon as they arrived and this was much appreciated. Colin Madelin ran a speed shoot at the end

We departed slightly from tradition and appointed Lawrence Braithwaite as Lord Paramount mainly to thank him for all his help and support over the years.

The speed shoot was won by Russell French (after a three-way shoot off), Roz Smith and Edward Tyhurst.

The Visiting Club Pairs trophy (Only awarded at the autumn shoot) went to Crothorne with Roz Smith and Dicky Summers,

The Open Team Trophy was won by Woking (Julia Madelin, Colin Madelin and Pauline Pringle, with a total of 251 points. For interest Crothorne came second with 230 points (Roz Smith, Dicky Summers and Alex Trankle) and Royal Richmond came third with 221 (Dave Archer, Steve Holder and Dorinda Franklin).

As you all know we have to cap entries at 90. This Autumn I received five apologies beforehand, but on top of that we did have a lot of know shows. I know it is a problem when people have to decide so far in advance whether they wish to shoot (the shoot was full three months ago), but it is appreciated when we know if they can't come. Fortunately this autumn we had negligible waiting list, but for May the wait list was huge.

However it was lovely to see all you and I hope you all enjoyed the shoot as much as we, the organizers did. Provisional dates for next year are Saturday 3rd May and Saturday 6th September Entry forms will be sent out in January,
