This is one of
Private Fred Walker's
cap badges - possibly the actual one seen here on the hat he is wearing.
It is the only photo we have of him.
We have one other cap badge, also handed down through the family, but it is not in such good condition.

Private Fred Walker's Cap Badge

The Cap Badge
Of the 13th & 14th Battalions
York & Lancaster Regiment
- "Barnsley's Own".
The badge features what is understood to be a tiger, as depicted in illustrations elsewhere, with a rose design above it, incorporating the white Yorkshire and red Lancashire blooms. It is topped with a royal crown.
The York and Lancaster wording also features, at the bottom, on a an upturning banner, which forms into a garland, to frame and decorate the design with distinction.
The regiment was raised in 1758 (65th and 84th Foot). During the South African War it formed part of Buller's army in Natal and took part in the battles leading up to the relief of Ladysmith.
Barnsley was one of the towns from where it drew recruits.
