RFA Fort George Completes Refit
RFA Fort George (A388) left the River Tyne today following the completion of a two month refit at the Cammell Laird yard at Hebburn.
Work undertaken involved structural, mechanical and electrical repairs throughout the vessel, as well as an extensive hull refurbishment programme.
However, following a number of cancelled contracts Cammell Laird were forced to call in the receivers in April this year. The departure of Fort George marks the end of work at the Tyneside yard, which will now be placed in mothballs retaining only a skeleton staff, pending sale.
Next week Cammell Laird's Birkenhead shipyard will also close, following the completion of refit work on RFA Argus (A135).
