Spa Class Coastal Water Carriers

The Spa Class coastal water carriers displaced 1,220 tons and had a speed of 9 knots. They measured 160ft in length and 30ft in breadth. Coal powered.

Constructed during the Second World War, the six vessels were, at one time or another, based overseas at Royal Navy bases in Mombassa, Singapore and Malta or in the UK at Sheerness, Faslane, Greenock, Pembroke Dock and the River Clyde. When serving abroad the of majority of their crew were locally employed personnel.

Spa Based at Greenock. Scrapped 1970.
Spabeck Based at Faslane. Between 1955 and 1958 Spabeck was used as a High Test Peroxide (HTP) carrier for the experimental submarines Explorer and Excalibur.She was laid up at Barrow-in-Furness in 1959 and was scrapped in 1966.
Spabrook Spabrook was based at Malta between 1950 and 1963 and then at Pembroke Dock between 1963 and 1976. She was scrapped in 1977.
Spaburn Spaburn was based first at Sheerness (1950-56), then at Malta (1956-63) and lastly on the River Clyde (1963-1971). She was laid up in reserve in 1971 and scrapped in 1977.
Spalake Saplake was based at Malta between 1950 and 1962, and then on the Clyde between 1963 and 1976. She was scrapped in 1977.
Spapool Spapool was based at Mombassa between 1950 and 1957, Malta between 1958 and 1965 and Singapore between 1965 and 1967. She was then based back at Mombassa between 1967 and 1976. During her transfer from Singapore to Mombassa in 1967, Spapool was commissioned into the Royal Navy. Sold in 1977.
