Providing Technical help to Industry and Education Establishments
Since there is often a number of methods available to treat a waste, consideration needs to be given to options that satisfy both commercial and technical requirements. This is usually assessed from a desktop study followed by laboratory work to test the conclusions reached if the commercial factors are deemed to be favourable. Experience in the waste industry is useful, since it can reduce the work necessary to achieve a successful conclusion.
Solvents are used extensively within the pharmaceutical industry to purify the intermediates and the final product. This leads to significant waste production, much of which is now recycled within the plants. However, there is always the need for further reduction, which can be achieved through process study. Audits can be arranged to carry out such studies, without impinging on site personnel.
Conventional, aqueous metal solutions have been treated to produce a sludge for shipment to landfill whilst sledges have gone direct to landfill. With landfill tax and the expected tightening of regulations, recycling of such wastes will become viable in terms of their metal content. Studies of this waste can be carried out to assess the viability for recycling and the appropriate route to be followed. This may be possible on-site.
There are considerable variations in treatment site licences. Consequently, a wide knowledge of the waste management industry is required if the best route is to be identified.. In addition, negotiations with the Environment Agency can be required to enable a site to accept a given waste stream. A technical knowledge of the chemical constituents and thus how they would potentially react with the site environment is an important factor on acceptability.
