Providing Technical help to Industry and Education Establishments
As with treatment site licences, variations between landfill site can be significant. A study of the licence can quickly reveal the acceptability for solid, liquid of sludge waste. Consequently a wide knowledge of the waste management industry is required. In addition, negotiations with the Environment Agency can be required to enable a site to accept a given waste. A technical knowledge of the chemical constituents and thus how they would potentially react with the site environment is an important factor on acceptability.
Treatment options usually produce a preferred treatment option, which in turn leads to a proposal. Re-examination of the options, from a waste management point of view, can often result in a different proposal with significant cost savings.
The treatment of a waste stream can involve a number of differing techniques. A list may include physical/chemical treatment i.e. acid neutralisation or mechanical processes i.e. centrifuging of oily waste. On occasions pre-treatment can be used advantageously to reduce the toxicity, which may be at a low concentration, such that the waste stream is relatively non-toxic. Examples are cyanides, pesticides or malodorous compounds. Pre-treatment on-site can result is a significant cost saving to the producer and make to waste stream easier to dispose of.
When designing a new product, consideration given to the disposal of the waste produced should ideally be considered at this stage. Variations at the planning stage to reduce waste or change it to in some way is often useful and can be very cost effective. However, when the product is established consideration can be given to potential improvements.
