Another new member to welcome is Don Wells persuaded to start with an evening ten by Lesley Cliff. Also welcome to John Duckworth a Nottm Clarion member who has joined us as a second claim member.

CLUB CLOTHING

I have had quite a lot of orders now for the club clothing and most people have had an order form – if you haven’t got a form let me know what you need with £15 deposit (payable to Sherwood Cycling Club) per item. I still have the sizing samples – although a size 5 jersey has disappeared – but I will have to return them soon. Anything you need for next season, or the winter, should be ordered now. Re-orders will depend on demand and I would expect re-orders in about 12 months.

CLUB RUNS

Club runs meet at the Shearing Hill/Burton Road junction on Saturdays at 9.30 a.m. and Sundays at 9.00 a.m.. Wednesday runs meet at Lowdham War memorial 9.15 a.m.

The May Bank Holiday was kind with the weather and the usual large group of “café racers” had a rapid ride to Sedgebrook. Sunday’s was a hillier ride to Wymondham and I managed to thwart the café break with a diversion along narrow semi-tarmacked lanes. The odd spot of rain after the tea stop came to nothing and we had a fast wind assisted ride back.

By Monday numbers had dwindled a bit. Oxton Bank and Eakring Hill didn’t suit Woody’s 18 sprocket nor my rapidly tiring legs. After an early stop at Rufford we returned via Norwell to spy our “road men” in the TLI event. Nigel White (with fresh legs) started driving on the front into a strong headwind on the way home. He had to stop when his bottle fell out over Bleasby crossing which sparked an attack from Doris who had been sitting comfortably on the back for the past 50 miles. I went out the back and declined an offer from Nigel to take me back up as he re-caught me!

CLUB NIGHT

Club nights and committee meetings are held on Mondays towards the end of each month at the Burton Road Community Centre, (opposite Walker’s Garage) Carlton 7.30-9.30 p.m. The next two meetings are 25 June and 23 July..

OPEN 10 7 JULY 2001

Keith Jackson is running the Open 10 on the Long Bennington course starting at 5 pm on Saturday 7 July. If you are intending to ride the entries have to be with Keith by 26 June – try and get a decent qualifying time before then as the event is likely to attract a full field. Let Keith know ASAP if you are able to help with marshalling, catering etc on the day.

RACING NEWS

There definitely seems more interest in racing this year. I reckon that 27 members have actually raced so far. Please keep me informed of performances so I can report in the Acorn.

Chris Pearson recently came close to beating the hour with a 1-00 ride in the Chesterfield Spire 25. In the Beeston RC 10 Dave Woodward showed his form returning with 23-57 and Chris Frost did 25-05. Chris then improved to 24-33 in the N. Notts event. Rob Stevens has at last found his speed with a 58 minute 25. Dave Woodward did 24-33 in the Mapperley Open 10.

The LVRC road races at Flawborough and Oxton saw Nigel Moon, Rob Stevens, Keith Jackson and Robert Godfrey taking part. In the Oxton event Nigel couldn’t keep with a small break – not surprising since the famed Les West was driving hard.

On Friday evening there are TLI road races starting at 7 pm from the Old Volunteer at Caythorpe. The course takes in Hoveringham, Thurgarton and Lowdham (including two level crossings each lap!). Chris Pearson has already had a fine second place to be bettered by a fine win by Rob Stevens in a later event. Robert Godfrey and Keith Jackson have been regular performers. The course is to be changed soon to one using Oxton Bank. The Norwell TLI race on Spring Bank Holiday Monday had a small field but four Sherwood riders. Rob, Chris and Keith had a tactic to weaken an Ashfield rider in their group. They kept him just in front so that he had to work alone whilst they worked as a 3 man team. As the finish approached they caught him and hoped he would be tired for finish – alas our lads had to settle for 2nd, 3rd and 4th!

4th Circuit TT Results  8:30 am Sunday 6 May 2001

With a cold start on wet roads the fresh North East wind made conditions unpleasant. John Duckworth just pipped Orford by five seconds for a debut win. As a second claim member John is eligible for medals in club events but not for trophies.

1st '25' TT Results

9:00 am Sunday 13th May 2001

A warm sunny morning was spoilt by a strong easterly wind making it tough going on the Granby circuit. Orford was nearly 6 minutes ahead of second man Kevin Newbury while Craig had to stop and tighten a loose wheel. Wayne hadn’t intended riding but was press ganged into riding (I think he’s just about recovered from the ride now!).

After the event tea and refreshments were enjoyed in Margaret’s garden which was also the venue for the club run.

You can enter these events on the line (70p) and bring a completed entry form with you so that you can be given a handicap allowance. If you do not bring a form you will not receive a handicap and will not earn any handicap points towards the Acorn Trophy.

Evening Tens

Tuesday Evening Tens start on the Old Epperstone Road near the Springfield Pub at 7.00 p.m..

The tens are proving quite popular again this season particularly as the weather has been a bit kinder during May. Rob Stevens is heading both leagues despite riding the earlier events on his winter bike. Maria Haynes has shown the most consistent improvement as her times during the month show.
