Congratulations to Neil Copland and Marie Holloway on their recent engagement.

Nigel White has had the misfortune to be knocked off his bike by a car resulting in a broken kneecap, I believe. This was just as he was looking forward to defending his title in the Nottm-Skegness Race. We all wish him a speedy recovery.

Rob and Jude Stevens have just returned from an adventurous cycling holiday in Greece. To overcome the hassle of taking bikes on the plane they intended hiring some in Greece. However, the bikes available were in a poor state so they bought two cheap mountain bikes and sold them back at the end of the holiday. A novel way to get bikes which ensured they had machines in good working condition for a reasonable cost. One little incident was when Rob got shot – fortunately it was only a Greek youth with an airgun!

Welcome to Steve Littlewood returning to membership of the Club after some years.

CLUB NIGHT

Club nights and committee meetings are held on Mondays towards the end of each month at the Burton Road Community Centre, (opposite Walker’s Garage) Carlton 7.30-9.30 p.m. The next two meetings are 24 September and 22 October.

CLUB RUNS

Club runs meet at the Shearing Hill/Burton Road junction on Saturdays at 9.30 a.m. and Sundays at 9.00 a.m.. From Sunday 7 October the Sunday runs meet at the later time of 9.30 am. (winter approaches already!) Wednesday runs meet at Lowdham War memorial 9.15 a.m.

SKEGNESS RACE SUNDAY 2 SEPTEMBER 7.30 AM

The Skegness Race has two trophies on offer the D. H. Brooks Trophy for the fastest rider and the Jack Ferguson Trophy for the best rider on handicap. If you are riding don’t forget to bring an entry form so you have a chance of winning the handicap trophy. A club run is also being held with a 7 am start. A coach will be at the Burton Road lay-by from 7 am leaving after the race has gone. Return is 4.30 pm from Skegness.

CLUB 50-MILE CHAMPIONSHIPS Sunday 15 August 2001

I haven’t the detailed result yet of the Championship incorporated in the BDCA 50, but Neil Walker was our fastest in 1-56-39 with Nigel White doing a 1-58 suffering with a detached insert in his shorts! Orford Spencer punctured, but despite losing about four minutes did a pb 2-12. Chris Pearson went off course and unwittingly missed out about 3 miles. He did 1-54 for the short course so would have been around the two-hour mark.

Neil also picked up the second handicap prize in the event which was his first ever 50. This makes Neil Club Champion at both 25 miles and 50 miles this year. Not bad to say he only started racing in June!

 EVENING TENS

The Evening Tens Series has now come to an end with Rob Stevens winning both the fastest and handicap sections again. Rob did four 22s with a best of 22-01 – excellent times on this relatively slow course.

The final event was marred by road works on the Epperstone by-pass with ramps and planed surfaces making for a rough ride. Chris Pearson suffered a puncture on what was his last chance of snatching the Bert Morris Trophy for the short distance BAR.

This season 28 members took part compared with 24 last year.
