Please note that Dave Bostock has recently moved and his new details are shown above.

Welcome to new members Martin Edjvet and Duncan Rolley who have joined recently.

Tim Pigula finished second in the ZipVit Challenge National Finals for fourth category riders. Tim and the eventual winner Scott Easter headed the field for a 2-up sprint. Although Tim is now second cat the competition is season long and he started as a fourth cat.

In the Beeston RC 25, Nigel White did 58:00 taking the veterans’ prize, Neil Walker 58:52 and Chris Draper 1:01:47 and won the team prize to boot. The event was on the sporting Griffydam course and won by Ashley Long in 57:05. In the VTTA 25 on a warm windy evening Nigel came third with 54:40 with Geoff Platts winning in 53:22 from Roger Iddles (53:32). Maria Haynes did 26:11 in the Leicester forest 10 also riding to and from the start at Seagrave.

We are looking at having some T-shirts with the club logo printed on. Rather than getting a stock printed we will try producing transfers for ironing onto your own garments. This overcomes problems of stocking various sizes and means you can even use your own T-shirt (or other shirt) of your choice.

The Club has just bought a new laser printer mainly for me to print, rather than photocopy, the Acorn News. This is the first printed edition and I have included a couple of photos (sadly only black and white but if you have a computer and receive a copy electronically you get colour!).

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 50 18 AUGUST

The championship was incorporated in the BDCA event again this year and three of our riders entered. Neil Walker did 1:51:36 to break Mick Perrin’s old club record of 1:52:51 and win the Judge Trophy for the club championship. Rob Stevens did 1:54:36 and Chris Draper 1:59:24. I don’t yet know the handicap times so the Acorn Points are not yet known.

CLUB NIGHT

Club nights and open Committee Meetings are held on Mondays towards the end of each month at the Burton Road Community Centre, (opposite Walker’s Garage) Carlton 7.30-9.30 p.m. The next two meetings are 23 September and 28 October.

ANDCC LIGHTHOUSE 25

My comment last month that I didn’t think we have ever won the team trophy has sparked a lot of reaction. Thanks to Paul Harwood, Lin James, Dave Coupe and Barry Shelton for advising me of the facts. Sherwood has, in fact, won the trophy twice in 1953 and 1955.

In 1953 Lin James won the event when riding for Sherwood with 59:41 (a very fast time in that era) and was backed by Harry Thompson, Ray Rowbotham, Haydn Chappell and Stuart Crichton. Notable stars beaten by Lin included Gordon Ian and Ray Booty – both multi champions through their racing careers.

The last time Sherwood won, in 1955, the team was led by John Pressman with a 59 with Dudley Whitt doing 1:1:09, Barry Shelton 1:1:13, Cliff Rowbotham a 1:2 and Geoff Moss a 1:5.

The Lighthouse Trophy, for the best team of five riders, originates from the name of a café that used to be at Gunthorpe and served as headquarters for many local time trials. Is it not about time Sherwood won it again?

Entry forms, with £5 fee, to be sent to Mick Perrin, 2 Greengates Avenue, Mapperley, Nottingham NG3 5JQ tel.9608215 by 10 September.

FORTHCOMING TIME TRIALS

Sunday 15 September, Gran Prix de Gents 17 m circuit start Old Epperstone Road 8.30 a.m. Two up team time trial with one (or more) riders a veteran.

Sunday 22 September is the ANDCC Lighthouse 25 on the Granby circuit. See above.

Sunday, 6 October Hill Climb on Terrace Hill 10.30 a.m. followed by freewheeling contest down Harby Hill.

CLUB RUNS

Club runs meet at the Shearing Hill/Burton Road junction on Saturdays at 9.30 a.m. and Sundays at 9.00 a.m. From 13 October, Sunday runs move to 9.30 a.m. Wednesday runs meet at Lowdham War memorial 9.15 a.m.

With some nice weather on Sundays we have extended the runs a little (make hay while the sun shines!). One run to Wymondham saw some break away on the first climb out of Woolsthorpe so they missed the detour the rest of us took through Skillington and Sewstern but at least it gave them a longer rest at the café.

The next week we used a few different roads on a run to Byard’s Leap bringing back memories of past road races on the Ancaster circuit. A loop round Welbourn and back through Stapleford Woods and Newark made it a 73-mile trip.

We ended up near Ancaster again the following week with a hilly ride out to the Roman Café and a flatter roundabout route back via Long Bennington – although it did get a bit fast at times. This gave us another 70 miles. All this should help to get us fit for the Skegness run.

Sometimes on these runs, when crossing main roads, we encounter friendly drivers who flash their lights and let us across. On one run we were turning into East Bridgford off the A46 when a driver flashed us, I went across but he didn’t slow down, he was warning us of his presence. Be warned that flashing of lights is not an official signal of giving way. I will be more wary in the future!

There is not a lot of change to the overall situation. A few improvements over 10 miles have increased some averages.

The increased competition this year has raised the speeds considerably. Last year Rob won with 24.331 mph

EVENING TENS LEAGUE

Such has been the keenness we have had riders every week despite a couple of very wet evening. There have been good fields with plenty of private trials making a total of 361 rides. The Total Fitness Nottingham triathlon club sent thanks for our welcome to their riders in the tens.

The new points scoring system with only the best ten rides counting has made the competition closer. Working in Nottingham has enabled Nigel White to ride these events and with ten wins he scored the maximum possible points. His best time was 21:27 and his slowest was still 22:37! Previous winner, Rob Stevens, had to give best to Nigel finishing just 3 points behind with a string of short 22s. Neil Walker added to the competition with regular 22-minute rides to finish third. Chris Draper was the only other rider to beat 23 minutes. Wayne Bradley started the year doing 29s and rode regularly to improve to 27s and comfortably took the handicap league.

ALPINE ADVENTURES

Chris Draper, Neil Walker and Nigel White have just been increasing their fitness with a short trip to the Alps. This included a timed climb of the Alp d’Huez where Nigel was fastest with 53 mins. Neil was 3 mins adrift and Chris 13.

I have put some photos on the printed Acorn but these make the file 12MB.

Take a look at Chris’s website for lots of photos at http://mysite.freeserve.com.cyclealps and one of Nigel’s at http://www.geocities.com/exguardianreader/Alps2002/descendcroixdefer.JPG

Nigel also intends to give more detail on the web.

CLUB CLOTHING

As autumn approaches you may need some new clothing. I have a stock of various garments in the popular club design. Sizes are limited. New orders are limited to 50 garments and there is quite a long delivery time. If there is sufficient demand I can put in a new order over the winter for things like skinsuits, SS jerseys ready for next summer. Unfortunately, it is not possible to keep a stock of all sizes in every garment.

Stock is: Bib shorts £31, Lycra bib tights £31, Roubaix bib tights £34, Roubaix waist tights £29, SS Coolmax jerseys £28, LS Jacquard jackets £36.50, Wintex winter jackets £39, Wintex gilets (zip pockets) £30, light gilets £28, arm warmers £9.50, plain black bib shorts at £16.50. I also still have some of the old design long and short sleeve jerseys at £20 and Lycra helmet covers at £5 (useful on cold winter days).

CLUB DINNER SATURDAY 23 NOVEMBER

It is always a good social night out and an opportunity to applaud the prizewinners.
