Sherwood Cycling Club
Jack Sharp - 50 Years On
This page is dedicated to the memory of Albert Sharp - July 1931 - November 1989
Last year a former member of the Sherwood CC, Jack Sharp was searching the internet and found our website, while reading an article called Albert and the rock, this short story re-lived the antics of loading riders saddlebags with heavy rocks to slow them down!!! (can you imagine if you did that to Doris!!!), this was published in the December 2001 edition of Acorn news and was written by John Watson, the main character was about an ex-member called Albert Sharp, this was Jack's late brother.
This prompted Jack to contact Sherwood CC via the website and after several email conversations he sent in a story of his own, recalling his fond memories of the club during the early fifties, this was published in the April 2002 edition of the Acorn news.
Through this contact Jack sent me many pictures of Albert, Eunice & John "Watto" Watson, Trevor Savage, Geof Key, Cliff Rowbotham during club runs, races etc, I also received copies of the Acorn News from that era, all this club history was saved and kept in good condition by Albert. I duly copied all the photos on a hi-res scanner to get a good copy for the website (of which I also let Jack has a CD ROM copy as well). Jack also gave me the old Acorn News, result sheets, newspaper clippings (one of which talk about some chap called Frank Beale trying to get under the hour for a '25'!!!), these documents are very interesting, they still talk about racing on the courses we still use today, club dinners and stories of what everyone got up to.
I received a phone call one evening from Geof who wanted to get into contact with Jack and that is what he did!!!
Since Jack's initial contact he has had re-unions, which have bridged a 50 year gap, with some of his old friends from this era, June and Walt Wilson, Geof and Audrey Key and he has contacted John Elliott in New Zealand, Alan Dowlman, John & Eunice Watson via email.
If you can fill in any of the blanks or have other pictures related to the Sherwood Cycling Club from any time period that can be put on this website, please contact me on sherwood.cc@btinternet.com
