Most of you will have now heard that Sid Standard died ten days after his tragic accident. Sid loved cycling and passed this on to countless riders. Ever optimistic and enthusiastic he lived for cycling whether riding, helping others or working in the trade. He overcame serious heart problems to return to cycling and died doing what he loved.
Last year in Mallorca Sid would start out before the “training” run to go at his pace. As we started to catch him a buzz would go around the bunch “It’s Sid”. Not much later he would appear at the lunch stop and be greeted with enthusiasm. Later in the day riders would call in at the Campanet café – you could be sure of seeing Sid there. Like the frames he used to make Sid was “Superbe”.
He didn’t want people to be sad after his death so he specified there should be a party to celebrate his life. Hundreds attended. Hundreds also cycled behind the hearse at his funeral with police escort – a great last club run and farewell for Sid. He enjoyed his life to the full but so many people will miss his cheery smile and wit. Our sympathies go to his wife Cath, son David and daughters Jill and Pat.
Welcome to three more new members this month Pete Walton, Barney Wainwright and Michelle Higgs. This brings the total of new members this year to 29 – a remarkable achievement.
Somehow last month I managed to omit Rod Corbett from our riders in the Craig’s Open 25. Super vet Rod was actually our fastest rider with 58:29 finishing twelfth overall. This was an excellent ride particularly as he had to get over his accident earlier in the year.
James Horsepool and Stephen Adams rode the GHS Juvenile National 10 Championships at Alcester, Warwickshire on Saturday 13 September. James was first man off and did a cracking ride, taking one and a half minutes off his PB with 28.19. Stephen, though not on top form, also managed a PB with 23.57. Ian Stannard won the event in 20.59. Both lads are still eligible to ride this championship for another 2 years. Hopefully, we can get a team in next year's race and challenge for the team title. At the Track League final night Stephen was presented with the winner’s trophy for the Juvenile league with 93 points. James and Adrian Staiano finished equal 8th on 24 points. James won the 4-lap handicap, Stephen then won the 8-lap handicap points race, then Adrian won the one lap handicap with Stephen 3rd. In the 2-lap handicap Adrian again triumphed with James 2nd and Stephen 4th. The lads won £25 and all 4 races on the night.
David McLean has been doing well in road races finishing in the bunch in a 140 km E/1/2/3 race gave him confidence to come 6th in the Easterly Falling Leaves RR then 9th in the Glendene CC after winning 3 out of 4 primes then getting dropped from the break.
Neil Walker at last won points with 7th in the Lincoln Whls RR the day after a 21:27 in the Clarion 10.
The café at Gunthorpe Locks has now re-opened having been re-furbished after an arson attack.

A disappointing field of 6 riders turned up for the 7.30 start on a cool, still, bright morning. The wind picked up later but was not helpful making Neil’s time excellent for the day. Jon was second after starting well but fading in his first TT over 25 miles.
John Watson had a difficult job in handicapping the event with only three riders bringing entry forms and having no recent form over such a distance. John synchronised watches over the phone with Craig (staying in Skegness for the weekend) who then timed the riders in.
Neil won the DH Brooks Trophy and Jon the Jack Ferguson Trophy for best on handicap.
How about riding this classic event next year? We will hire a coach next year to try and boost the event. Please support it either by riding or just making it a day out.

On a dry, sunny and warm day with a slight southerly wind the formidable duo of Nigel and Neil stormed round the 17-mile course just 6 seconds slower that last year to record the fastest time and best Veterans’ Age Standard time to retain the Corona Shield. Stephen Adams and John Duckworth had a fantastic ride and took second spot with Dave and Maria taking third. Timekeeper: Trevor Adams
ANDCC LIGHTHOUSE TROPHY 25 – A WIN AT LAST!
|
What a great day for the Club! We actually won the Lighthouse Trophy for the fastest five riders for the first time since 1955! Not only that but Nigel won the Mick Oldnall Trophy for the second successive year with his closest challenger being our own Neil. Neil has been on such great form lately I thought he might get the better of Nigel but Nigel managed to hold him off. Jon was 5th overall beaten by Chris Storer, Ashfield RC 56:27 and Ashley Long, Coalville Whls 57:10. The times were good for the Granby course where anything under the hour is exceptional and it was a windy day but dry and mild. It was also a profitable day as our riders won a total of £210 from the generous prize list. Ashfield RC just pipped North Notts Olympic for second team but our riders were ten minutes clear. We had plenty of riders in reserve with times good enough in case any of our top five puntured. Tim was making a rare time trial appearance and rode without tri-bars. Dave Ashcroft lost a lot of time when his tri-bars came loose. It was a proud day for the Club with so many riders taking part and supporting. Well done everybody. The only drawback to winning is that we will have to organise the event next year. Fortunately, Wayne has already volunteered to do this so we will have to seek marshals and helpers to run the event successfully. We want to win it again – make it a target next year.
Neil, Tim, Nigel, Rob and Jon with the Lighthouse Trophy and the Mick Oldnall Trophy
