Tony Bullen has joined the Club as an associate member, he was a member of the Club many years ago and combined cycling with speed skating at Olympic level. He has also generously donated £5 “for the juniors” – this will be a bonus prize for the “Most Promising Junior Award”.
Nigel White has knocked over a minute off Mick Perrin’s Club 100-mile Record doing 3:53:32 in his first hundred, the Icknield RC event, where he also took third place. The following Sunday he was entered in the National Championship 12-hour on what proved to be the hottest day of the year causing many problems for riders. Unfortunately, Nigel had to retire early when his seat clamp broke. This was a possible relief as he was still overcoming saddle soreness from the 100!
David McLean had a third place in the 105 km Mid Suffolk Road Race and has now moved up to 2nd category. He will be back in Nottingham soon after the University’s summer break.
Jon Hunt was fourth with 21:41 in the Hemel Hempstead CC 10. Jon was in the Hemel Hempstead when he was National Junior 25 champion ten years ago.
Neil Walker was sixth in the BDCA 50 with 1:52:40. This also made him the Club 50-mile Champion winning the Judge Trophy in the process. I think Lesley Cliff was our only other rider in this event.
Lesley Cliff has won the gold medal in the World’s Duathlon Championship in Switzerland. The event was run/bike/run on a hilly and technical course made worse by heavy rain and cold.
Sid Standard of Beeston RC, well liked and respected by the hundreds who have ridden with him over many years, was involved in a serious accident on 31 August. He is in intensive care after a collision with a tractor on a single-track road near Shottle in Derbyshire. He was air lifted to hospital where he had to have a leg amputated below the knee. We can only hope that Sid can come through this devastating incident and our best wishes go to him, his wife Cath and family.
CLUB NIGHTS
Monthly Club nights and open Committee Meetings are on Mondays at the Burton Rd Community Centre, (opposite Walker’s Garage) Carlton 7.30-9.30 p.m. The next two meetings are 29 September and 27 October.
NOTTINGHAM –SKEGNESS RACE 7 SEPTEMBER
This classic club time trial starts at 7.30 a.m. from the lay-by on Burton Road by the running track. There are several members who intend to ride so turn up and have a go if you fancy a challenge over the 75 miles. Two nice trophies are up for grabs, one for fastest and one for handicap so don’t forget your entry forms. There is no coach this year so car sharing is needed.
GRAND PRIX DE GENTS 14 SEPTEMBER
This event is a 2-up time trial over the 17-mile Circuit TT course starting at Old Epperstone Road, Lowdham at 8.30 a.m. To qualify one rider (at least) should be a veteran (over 40) and the winner is decided on the veteran’s age standard. Enter on the line.
ANDCC LIGHTHOUSE 25 21 SEPTEMBER
Many members have already entered this event on the Granby course. Entries £5.50, with properly completed entry form to Mick Perrin, 2 Greengates Avenue, Mapperley, Nottingham NG3 5JQ (tel 9608215) by Tuesday 8 September. We need all our best riders on top form to try and win the Lighthouse Trophy for the best team of 5 riders – we last won it 48 years ago!
CLUB HILL CLIMB SUNDAY 5 OCTOBER
This is a fun event (if that is possible for a hill climb!) and is on Terrace Hill in the Vale of Belvoir. We will have a club run (starting 9 a.m from Shearing Hill) to the event and follow with a Freewheeling Competition on Harby Hill. There is no entry fee and no prize.
CLUB RUNS
Club runs meet at the Shearing Hill/Burton Road junction on Saturdays at 9.30 a.m. and Sundays at 9.00 a.m. Wednesday runs meet at Lowdham War memorial 9.15 a.m.
We have enjoyed some hot and sunny weather in August. After a trip to Swinderby café on a Wednesday run to check on Sunday opening we headed there on 3 August to find it closed! We headed back to Newark on emergency tanks where we spread our custom between the adjacent cafes of Gannett’s and Feeling Peckish. At least it wasn’t far to ride back from there.
On the 10th I missed the run (we had a break in Berkshire, where it was even hotter) and Dave Bostock took the group to Newtown Linford. Some heavy showers gave relief from the heat. A longish run on the 17th to the Roman Café in Lincolnshire was on a fresher day but it got quite hot later. For a change we went out the flatter way via Long Bennington and Belton returning over the hills through Stroxton, Croxton and Knipton. It seemed easier than doing the reverse.
Byard’s Leap was the destination the next week. The roads there are always pleasant, until the nasty little climb from Frieston, but the break had already gone by then. Ian Church punctured with a couple of mile to go. I waited with him and we didn’t get a very long café stop as a result. The trip home via Caythorpe, Stubton and Balderton is usually good because you seem to get lots of downhill and we did have a tailwind. As it was a Bank Holiday we also had a run next day to Margaret’s. This was quite steady as we only had 11 riders and a lot of tired legs.
The next week we had over 20 riders and headed for Rufford. A small break went just after Bleasby while the rest of us rode a bit more sedately via Caunton, Norwell, Ossington and Laxton. Returning through Hexgreave Park the hedges had been cut so a roadside stop in Farnsfield to attend to about six punctures was needed.
I have now run out of bib shorts but have the following items in stock. With autumn approaching you might consider a long sleeved jersey available in Summer or winter Jacquard material. I will have to order more stock ready for next year so let me know if you want anything in particular.
Skin suits £42, S/S Coolmax Jersey ¾ concealed zip £28, Jacquard Summer full zip L/S £30 S/S £25, Jacquard Winter full zip £35, Light gilet (windvest) £27. Arm Warmers (one pair left) £9.50, Lycra Bib Tights £31, Roubaix waist tights (one pair size 5) £29, Wintex jacket (one size 6) £39.

Evening Tens League
The Evening Tens have proved even more popular this year with 45 members taking part and a total of 413 rides (including private trials) through the series. This compares well with 26 members riding last year’s series. We have managed to run an event every week, but we were down to three riders in the rain on 29 July.
Nigel White scored maximum points of 60 with wins in all his ten qualifying rides. His fastest was 21:06 and was inside 22 minutes six times. Neil Walker was second with 54 points. Neil got faster towards the end of the series eventually beating 22 minutes with 21:42. Last year Nigel was the only rider inside 22 minutes (three times) with a best of 21:27.
Steve Jeremiah won the handicap section improving through the season from 27:16 to 24:38. Giles White was just one point behind after improving 4½ minutes but only rode nine qualifying events.
It’s some years since we had any riders for the Junior League so it was good to see four riders. Stephen Adams was easily the fastest, and unbeaten, getting down to 24:10 but he has much more experience than the others who should show big improvements next year as they mature. Stephen won the handicap section with James Horsepool second in both sections.
OPEN 25 SATURDAY 2 AUGUST 2003
Craig’s event had entries selected on the slowest 120 riders thereby giving slower riders the chance of a ride on a fast course. It attracted a full field plus reserves – the faster riders being reserves. It was fine weather and thankfully there were no road works.
Martin Edjvet did a pb 1:2:03 winning 2nd handicap and Giles White did a pb 1:2:58 for 3rd handicap. Our other riders were Lesley Cliff 1:8:44 and Terry Kelly 1:10:58. Terry won a spot prize voucher for £2.50 (courtesy of www.slipstreams.org.uk) by finishing in 90th position.
The event was won by C. Crookes, Rutland CC in 55:35 with Alford Whls taking the team prize. Helen Gutteridge, Beeston RC was fastest lady 1:00:47
HARVEY HADDEN TRACK
It now seems inevitable that the cycle track will close to make way for improvements to the running track. However, there are hopes of a possible new venue for a cycle track in the Bilborough area.
In the meantime Forest Town Track near Mansfield looks like being used to fill the gap between the old and, hopefully, the new.
The dinner, dance and prize presentation is being held on Saturday 29 November at the Richard Herrod Centre, Foxhill Road, Carlton priced at £16 (under 16 half price). Numbers are limited. There will be a three-course meal with a vegetarian option. The meal is to be served at 7.30 p.m. but you can turn up for a pre dinner drink and a chat from 6.30 p.m. There will be a disco after the meal finishing at midnight.
This is a change of venue from last year and is £2 cheaper! Come along and bring your partner for a good night out and cheer the prizewinners.
