RACING NEWS
There have been so many good rides by members I’m in danger of losing track. The Club was well represented in the Nottm. Clarion Hilly “26” on May Day Bank Holiday. The weather was foul with cold heavy rain. Nigel White, who won last year, had to settle for 2nd with 1:03:32 behind Matt Bottrill – a clear winner with 1:00:50. Jon Hunt was 4th with 1:05:02, this took some determination as he had just come back from a weekend in Dublin (Guinness and whiskey) only getting home in the early hours before the race. Giles White’s handlebars worked loose, he had to stop for assistance but finished in 1:11:49 to make the winning team as Neil Walker had the misfortune to puncture and withdraw. Our riders (Paul 23:19, Nigel 23:35 and Woody 26:00) also won the team (they wrongly gave it to Ashfield at first!) in the CDLCA 10 on a very hard day.
Bottrill again pushed Nigel (21:07) into second place in the Beeston 10. In the Chesterfield Spire 25 Nigel smashed his own Club 25 record (was 53:09) with 51:47. Paul Monaghan clocked 53:25 and Neil Walker 53:29 to win the team. Woody and Rod Corbett also did 58s. Paul was 5th fastest in the VTTA National Championships (yes he is a veteran!) with 57:27 - a good ride on a not very fast course. Dave Woodward also rode doing 1:03. Chris Pearson did 2:56 in the VTTA Nottm.-Skegness. Giles was 9th in the Team Spirit Hilly at Taddington. The National 10 Champs at Tuxford had Nigel 27th with 20:31, Neil 21:38, Rob (I’ve retired) Stevens 21:45, Jon 22:05 (incl.20s late start penalty) and Andy, riding for Arctic 21:10. In the L.Eaton 25 Paul was 5th 57:03, Woody 1:2:07 and Craig (best season for years) 1:2:53. Neil did 21:59 in the Mapperley 10 finishing 2nd just 9 seconds adrift. Craig did a pb 23:29 having discovered that you need to train! Paul was 12th in the Poole Whls 10 with a pb 21:13.
Stephen Adams was 10th in the Cardiff 2-day but crashed in the West Midlands RR where he was “most aggressive rider”. Rob Godfrey won the Bruce Bailey Trophy for his age group in the Velo99 RR at Norwell. Tim Pigula got 9th in the Trinity RR and 7th in the BUSA Championship RR. He crashed in a race at Totnes but still got 16th. Gavin Wilkinson was 9th out of around 100 at Darley Moor – we had 4 riders.
Tim, Nigel, Kris and Gavin all rode the East Mids Divisional Champs. Gavin slid off on wet leaves and eventually pulled out. Nigel got in a promising break and punctured. Kris worked hard to try and catch a break but then got dropped. Ever reliable Tim was our only finisher in 19th spot but in the points.
In Triathlon Lesley Cliff retained the gold medal for her age group in the World Championships in Madeira followed by bronze in the World Duathlon where Matt Hawcroft was 22nd in his age group.

4th CIRCUIT TT 2 MAY
|
A lovely warm sunny day saw a rare defeat for Nigel. Neil was in cracking form and was just 19 secs outside Nigel’s course record. Giles gets ever closer to his brother by taking 3rd spot. Dave Ashcroft won the handicap from Barry Shelton and Gavin. Thanks to John Watson and Terry Kelly for timing and handicapping.

1st 25-MILE TIME TRIAL SUNDAY 9 MAY
|
Good conditions for the first 25 on the sporting Oxton Circuit saw the first ever times under the hour on this course. Nigel’s ride was exceptional as he even stopped to remove a long sleeve jersey, as he was too warm! Neil was almost 2 minutes slower in 2nd spot. Giles did a pb for 3rd and second H/C. Matt was first on H/C and Michelle 3rd, both riding their first ever 25’s. John Watson and Terry Kelly did the timekeeping and handicapping. |

2nd 25-MILE TIME TRIAL SUNDAY 16 MAY
|
Five riders under the hour on the Granby course is remarkable even on a superb day such as this. Nigel did his fastest ever for the course despite the efforts of breaking his own Club 25 record the day before. It was the first time “under” for Giles and young Stephen did well in his first ever 25. Andy lost some time by going off course but still did a 59. Barry Shelton (he was in our winning Lighthouse Team in 1955!) did a great ride to beat Craig by one second for first handicap. Thanks to John Watson and Terry Kelly for timing, handicapping. |
|
OXTON BANK CIRCUIT TIME TRIAL 23 MAY
|
With riders elsewhere only four riders faced the timekeeper on this sunny morning for the prospect of climbing Oxton Bank after 3 miles. John won with a decent time for the 28 miles but well outside the 1:9 of Neil last year. Michelle took first handicap. Thanks to Trev Adams and Terry Kelly for timing and handicapping.

EVENING TENS LEAGUE
|
The evening Tens retain their popularity and attract some regular private trials – we had 31 riders on 18 May. Nigel has the fastest time so far with 21:00 on an evening when four riders were inside 22 minutes – it might well have been five if Paul Monaghan hadn’t punctured. The competition certainly seems to be driving times down. Last year Giles started with 29’s and improved to 25’s – he is now doing 22’s. Nigel has also taken a clear lead in the Senior Fastest League with Neil and Paul challenging. Andy has settled into a routine of 21’s but doesn’t qualify for points. Rapidly improving Craig leads on handicap. How fast can he get? In the Junior League only Stephen and Terence have ridden. Stephen is well ahead on both fastest and handicap but Terence has only ridden two so far.

CLUB RUNS
Club runs meet Shearing Hill/Burton Rd junction on Saturdays at 9.30 a.m., Sundays 9.00 a.m. Wednesday runs meet at Lowdham War memorial 9.15 a.m.
Discussions have been held on the Virtual Clubhouse about having some easier runs suitable for those who can’t manage a normal club run. We have had one recent run with a couple of riders meeting us at the tea stop. Possibilities are for a shorter Sat/Sun run and a summer evening ride (stop at a pub? Mountain bikes?). Any ideas or interest? Put a post on the Forum or let me know your views.
DISCOUNT
If you are a DIY fan (or forced into it!) and want to hire any tools Cameron Davies (he often rides our tens) runs Merit Tool Hire on Gedling Rd, Carlton and offers a 25% discount to Sherwood members.
