Welcome to new members Oliver Jamison, Sasha Andrews, George Thackray and Keith Stocker.

Also Chris Draper has re-joined the club after a short absence.

Those members who get their 3rd party insurance via our CTC affiliation will now have to pay £15 instead of £10. The general consensus is that it is better to become a full member of either British Cycling (essential to ride their events) or the CTC because of the additional benefits particularly legal assistance in making a claim for damages.

RACING NEWS

David McLean had his first road race win in the Easterly Falling Leaves 110km event. After a fall he had to chase and then got in a 7-man break with the adrenalin boost from the crash he won the sprint. A week later he won again in the Glendene 1/2/3/4 event. Despite David’s burst of success he hasn’t surpassed Tim Pigula’s early season efforts for the Club Road Race Championship.

Paul Monaghan did his first sub 21 minute ten by taking fourth spot in the CDLCA event with 20:59. Neil Walker was 6th in the Ratae 10.

Nigel hit top form winning the Clarion 10 with a pb 19:53 beating Julian Ramsbotham by 4s and Tony Alcock by 13s. I think he was quite pleased! Neil did 21:13, Giles 22:00, Woody 22:59, Simon Hookway 23:12 and Wayne 25:55. He also has had a couple of second places with 55:51 in the BDCA 25, despite being tired from some mega training rides and then in the Rotherham Whls. 50 he did 1:57:30.

Stephen Adams had a good 2nd place in the East Midlands Premier J/V/W cyclo-cross in Derby. Dave Ashcroft rode the challenging Three Peaks Cyclo-Cross getting round in 5 hours.

NOTTINGHAM-SKEGNESS EVENT 5 SEPTEMBER

A welcome spell of good weather gave a boost to participation in our annual jaunt to the seaside.

After a few spells of early mist the sun soon warmed everyone making a very pleasant late summer’s day. The wind did pick up as well and as it was from the east it did slow the proceedings somewhat, but it wasn’t a great problem.

The day was spoiled, however, by Tattershall Bridge being closed following a fatal accident the previous day. A diversion was in place and timekeeper/handicapper Trevor had the foresight to be on the spot and take the times of riders at the diversion. He also phoned Stephen on the club run to alert us of the problem.

The difficulty was that the diversion was into Woodhall Spa and there are numerous ways for riders to get to Skeggy from there – and most were discovered! This meant that times at the finish were largely irrelevant, as different distances had been covered. The most sensible resolution was to use the times at Tattershall Bridge and adjust the handicap allowances accordingly.

This gave Nigel the DH Brooks Trophy for fastest (the time on the Trophy may look odd though!) and Chris took the Jack Ferguson Trophy for best on handicap.

Fifteen riders went on the club run using a slightly different route to the race. It was a pleasant surprise to see Chris Draper out again. We took the diversion to Woodhall Spa, then back to Tattershall for our normal tea stop. As we approached the closed bridge from the other side the police re-opened the road. We could have just waited and missed the extra 11 miles! We all finished together albeit later than normal having covered 84 miles – we still had time for the usual fish & chips washed down by a couple of pints.

The good weather had inspired a last minute boost in bookings for the coach (cost £350) but we still made a loss – perhaps next time the fare will have to be £15 instead of £10. Will it still be supported if the weather is bad?

GRAND PRIX DE GENTS 17-MILE CIRCUIT 12 SEPTEMBER

This is a 2-up team time trial based on Veterans’ Age Standard.

On a dry, bright sunny morning with a strong W/NW wind Stephen and John improved their position from 2nd last year. They beat their John’s Standard Time by over 6 minutes.

Jon and Giles were fastest on actual time and second on Standard.

ANDCC LIGHTHOUSE 25

Another successful day for the Club. After winning the team prize last year, the club had the task of organising the event and Wayne did a great job, even managing to ride as well. He deserved his long massage afterwards!

Competition was more intense this year with North Notts Olympic and Ashfield fielding strong teams. As expected Tony Alcock of N. Notts was fastest in a record 54:00 despite the wind and the sporting nature of the Granby circuit. However, Nigel did a great ride to finish just 23 seconds down in second place and Jon (“not done any training”) in third spot. Paul had prepared for the event by running the Robin Hood Half Marathon the previous Sunday in 1:29.

Giles backed the “Fab Four” of Jon, Paul, Nige and “Lilo” for an aggregate team time of 4:44:53 with N. Notts 4:50:49 and Ashfield 4:53:09. Woody was in reserve and would have made the winning team in the event of a mishap to anyone but Nigel. Simon Nicholas was our best rider on handicap. Well done to all our riders. It is good to see the event undergoing a revival with such competition for the Lighthouse Trophy – better than just chasing fast times on the A1.

CLUB BAR

The Club BAR is based on the average of the best three average speeds in the 17-mile Circuit TT, Evening Tens and Club 25s (including the Lighthouse). It was a close fought competition with Nigel just beating Jon. Times and speeds can be perused in the table.
