RACING NEWS
At last Craig Watson has beaten the hour! – It has taken many years but he did 59:32 in the VTTA 25, well done. In the same event Paul Monaghan did 54:07, Dave Woodward a PB 57:05 and our super vet Rod Corbett 57:49.
Stephen Adams has won the East Midlands Division Youth Circuit Race Championships. The Championship was incorporated in an event at Darley Moor with a good field of about 30 riders. Stephen finished 3rd but as best East Midland’s rider he is Divisional Champion – no doubt he will win more championships in the future.

Following a couple of successful Monday evening rides it has been decided to hold off road rides through the winter on the second Sunday of each month. The first two are on 10 October and 14 November and start from the car park at Sherwood Pines (near Edwinstoe). These are suitable for any members interested and for any newcomers as an introduction to cycling. Bring along any family members, or youngsters you know, who want a cycle ride but find a normal club run too daunting. Different venues may be chosen later.
Neil intends to use these as part of his qualification as an Activity Coach. A stipulation is that riders must wear a helmet.
If you would like to go on these runs and still get some miles in you can ride out to the venue. Jon Hunt intends doing this so you can join him. There is now a section on the Club Forum for MTB so you can pick up to date information there.
Monthly Club nights and open Committee Meetings are on Mondays at the Burton Rd Community Centre, (opposite Walker’s Garage) Carlton 7.30-9.30 p.m. The next meetings are 27 September and 25 October.

EVENING TENS COURSE
If we have to move our tens next season, we will have to try and fit in with the Mapperley events as they already use the course. One option may be to use a new circuit based on Oxton Lane, Oxton island, Northgate and the A614. This would minimise interference with their events. We will be having discussions with the Mapperley to try and come to some arrangement that suits all parties. Issues to be resolved are things like start times, parking, private trials. Any ideas for alternative courses? We need a safe course not too far away without being too sporting!
EVENING TENS LEAGUE
|
The Evening Tens League is now completed and in the Senior League Nigel has maintained his maximum points total having scored ten wins. He managed a best time of 20:57 knocking a second off Andy Proffitt’s Series record. He has had some serious competition though with Paul in second spot – a remarkable achievement in his first season. Neil and Jon were not far behind either, even though Jon only rode 9 events. The Handicap Section had even fiercer competition with Don on 30, Wayne on 29 and Craig on 28. Don made a late surge to win with only 9 rides but he steadily improved by over 3 minutes during the season. Wayne and Craig both improved by around 2 minutes. In the Junior section Stephen ran out winner of both sections and was undefeated on actual time. James made good progress after a delayed start to the season following an ice skating accident. The whole series was successful with numbers up again on last year. In total we had 474 rides (including private trials) over the 19 events. This gives an average of about 25 riders per event. Every event was run this year with several riders still keen to ride even if it was raining. Just two years ago we had 27 members riding, this year it was 50. In 2002, Nigel was the only rider to beat 22 minutes and he did it three times. This year Nigel was inside 22 minutes 9 times, Jon 6, Andy 5, Neil 3 and Paul twice. The best thing though about the tens is the good atmosphere. Everyone seems to enjoy the events and relish the competition. We have quite a lot of regular private trials and have picked up new members through these. |

ROAD RACE 2005
Oliver Mehmet and Neil Walker have been making progress with organising an Open Road Race under British Cycling Rules next season. The event is planned for Sunday 19 June on the Harby Circuit using Hose Village Hall as HQ
Oliver and Neil will need plenty of help on the day. Please help out and make the event a success as expected from a Sherwood promotion.
OPEN TIME TRIALS 2005
Rob Stevens and Craig Watson have both indicated that they wish to step down from organising their events next season because of personal circumstances. There may be a little leeway in changing dates but events may have to be dropped, as dates have to be submitted very soon.
Running events rely heavily on volunteers giving up their precious spare time and the willingness of club members to help out with marshalling etc. With a healthy club membership the burden can be lessened if everyone did at least a little bit.
Is anyone prepared to take over as organiser of an Open Time Trial?
CLUB RUNS
Club runs meet Shearing Hill/Burton Rd junction on Saturdays at 9.30 a.m., Sundays 9.00 a.m. Wednesday runs meet at Lowdham War memorial 9.15 a.m. On 10 October the Sunday runs revert to a 9.30 a.m. start time.
Club runs should be an ideal way in which new members can be introduced to cycling and I always have the aim of making sure we don’t leave anyone behind. This becomes very difficult with a large group, as it is often difficult to see from one end to the other. If you are riding near the back and see someone in difficulty, pass the message up the group and then we can ease off.
In recent weeks many riders have been getting a bit over-enthusiastic and breaking away on the first climb, sometimes an hour away from the café stop. When this happens, I can’t keep track of every rider. While I am waiting for the slowest riders, some may be between groups and lose their way.
I wouldn’t want to have a strictly regimented group as many riders enjoy a bit of a “burn-up”. All I ask is for a bit more consideration for the slower riders, particularly if they are new. A new rider, dropped, alone and lost 30 miles away from home might not look forward to coming out again next week!
After all, these are club runs not training runs.
