Three more new members have joined us recently - Carl Barson, Darren Buckby and Gavin Thomas.
We still need a volunteer to take over as Secretary and Treasurer when Terry steps down. You can be assured that Terry will have the accounts in good order for a smooth handover and plenty of guidance. How about if the job was split – one person as Secretary and one as Treasurer? We have a lot of talented members who could easily take over and bring in some fresh ideas. How about it? We are also in desperate need of more timekeepers for next season mainly for the Sunday events but also occasional Tuesday evenings.
Stephen Adams did a superb ride with a personal best 22:06 to take the bronze medal in the GHS National 10-mile final.
In the CDLCA 10 Paul Monaghan did 21:43, Matt Shaw 21:55 (his first sub 22), Woody 23:12 and Rod Corbett 23:47. In the Rockingham 10 Jon Hunt did 20:28, Neil Walker 20:43 – I don’t know Rod’s time.
Darren Hodgkinson was 7th in his age group in the World Duathlon Championships in Australia. Verity Butler won the Women’s Southwell Triathlon.
The next club nights and open Committee Meetings are on 31 October and 28 November at the Wheldon School 7.30 p.m. We are now in a larger room (where we had the last AGM) near the old room. The Annual General Meeting is on 12 December.
“GO-RIDE”
The MTB sessions run every second Sunday of the month (next is 9 October) and start at 10am at Sherwood Pines. Sessions at the school have finished for the winter. Funding is being sought to get some bikes for youngsters to use, possibly with the Wheldon School to allow wider use and storage facilities.
CYCLO-CROSS TRAINING WEDNESDAY AT THE WELDON SCHOOL
These new training sessions are at 6.30 p.m. until 8.00 p.m.
Rob Stevens suggests an informal end
of season night out (partners included) on Saturday 29 October meeting at the
Nags Head on Mansfield Road for a few beers then maybe something to eat.

Timekeeper & Handicapper: Craig Watson
It was a very disappointing entry of just three for this prestige event. The start was misty but quite warm with a light SE wind but as the sun came out and the coast approached a stronger wind blew from the east. Neil was the man in form beating Nigel by nearly six minutes for the DH Brooks Trophy and finishing well ahead on handicap. The rules only allow one trophy per rider so Giles took the Jack Ferguson Handicap Trophy.
Running of the Skegness Race puts us in a bit of a quandary. Is it worth putting on such an event for three riders? These days the race is considered “long distance” but surely it should be within the capabilities of most time triallists? In the past, riders of very much varied capabilities saw it as a worthwhile challenge and planned to ride it well in advance. Now many riders can’t decide to take part until the last moment.
The club run to Skegness was better supported with 10 riders and two other pairs made their own way making 14 in total. On a normal Sunday run we usually get about 30 riders. Do people consider the run too far or can’t they spare a full day for the trip? Half the riders who went to Skegness don’t normally come on a Sunday run (they think they are too hard) but rose to the occasion to make an effort for a special ride. The group of ten met up with Jude and Tim at Tattershall and we crossed the Fens, by a complicated but traffic-free route, into a wind that got stronger and stronger. My hopes of finishing together were dashed as we rejoined the main road with 2 miles to go when the attacks started - I think some of our group should have been wearing numbers! Chris and Karen started off first disappearing into the mist not to be seen again during their ride!
With just three good riders in the race it meant quite a wait for the other riders to arrive.
The coach was better supported this year meaning we only made a small loss. This is thanks in part to non-cycling passengers having a day (or afternoon really) in Skeggy. Sixteen bikes were loaded onto the coach ready for the return journey. The logistics of the coach are very difficult to plan, as there is a great reluctance for people to book in advance. We never know how many are going or how many bikes there will be until the day. The weather helped bring in support but if it had rained how many would have gone?

This 20-mile 2-up team time trial on 2 laps of the Oxton circuit is based on the performance against the Veteran’s Age Standard. A cool north wind didn’t prevent Neil and Paul beating their target by nearly 3 minutes. It was a small field again although we did have a lot going on that day. Riders do seem to find it difficult to sort out riding partners in advance. Thanks to Terry Kelly for doing the timing.

“COME & TRY” TIME TRIAL SUNDAY 11 SEPTEMBER
Karen laid everything on for this event with refreshments, Scarrington Village Hall, signs and marshals. Unfortunately, we were lacking riders with only four taking part perhaps explained by holding it on a day when we also had a club event, a “Go-Ride” session and a club run. We will look for a more suitable time next season with more advanced notice.
Richard Tutton rode two laps (10.6 miles) in 31:49, in the 5-mile event Chris Granger did 15:31 and Wayne rode with Nicola (on MTBs) in 21:22.
ANDCC LIGHTHOUSE 25 18 SEPTEMBER
|
Our riders were out in force for this event with all 15 of our entrants finishing. Nigel won the event breaking the course record and beating scratch man Matt Bottrill of De Rosa RT. Nigel kept the Mick Oldnall Trophy as best ANDCC rider. We won the Lighthouse Trophy for the best team of five for the third year in a row. We were so far ahead that we would have still won even without Nigel. Matt just missed out on the team and John did a great ride taking second handicap in the event. Stephen was tired from cyclo-cross the day before but didn’t give up. Rob Stevens ensured the event was well run with help from Dave Gartside in organising the marshals.

CLUB SHORT DISTANCE BEST ALL ROUNDER
|
Following the Lighthouse 25 Nigel has extended his lead in the Short Distance Club BAR. Qualifying rides are all in Club (and Association) events. It is a sign of the times, but no riders have qualified for the other BAR competitions over 25, 50 and 100 miles and over 50, 100 miles and 12 hours. There are no qualifiers for the Ladies’ BAR either. We have some nice trophies waiting for someone to win!

CYCLO-CROSS
The cyclo-cross season is now in full swing and the Notts & Derby League is thriving with regular Saturday events attracting large fields.
In the first round at Sherwood Pines Patrick Hughes was 7th @ 0.54 in the under 10s. Pete Lifford rode the main event (82nd). Patrick missed his event in the second round at Allestree Park, but being keen rode the under 12s starting a lap down! In the main event Simon Watts was 36th, Paul Monaghan 40th and Roger Hughes 72nd.
In the next round at Shipley Park
Steve Adams finished 3rd
after leading for much of the first lap, beating a quite a few prominent riders.
This was his best ever Notts & Derby placing. Adrian Staiano, James Horsepool
and Roger all started near the back. Adrian had a good start and was lying 50th
after the first lap with James and Roger around 70th in the 85-rider field.
Adrian faded towards the end to finish 64th, whilst James was 71st and Roger
76th.
Steve won the Lincoln Wheelers event after warming up by riding to Edale Youth Hostel the previous day. He seems to get better all the time and shows great versatility in all branches of the sport.
| The remaining events in
the Notts & Derby League are shown in the table.
Note that Trevor is running an event on 11 Feb! |

CHRISTMAS LUNCH SUN. 18 DECEMBER
Ann Spencer has booked the Ferry Farm for a lunch on Sunday 18 December.
CLUB RUNS
Club runs meet Shearing Hill/Burton Rd junction on Saturdays at 9.30 a.m. and on Sundays (from 9 Oct) at 9.30 a.m. Wednesday runs meet at Lowdham War Memorial 9.15 a.m. Subject to demand an easier run will split off from the regular Sunday run.
Steve Flaherty organised a Youth Hostel weekend at Edale at the end of September. Ten of us went and I devised a route to take in some interesting scenery and a few little climbs. We had a pleasant ride with plenty of re-grouping and café stops. Winnats Pass emphasised the need for low gearing with some resorting to 24 inches (i.e. two feet). I found 38x27 adequate, much lower than I used to need.
The Youth Hostel was comfortable and the regime of hostelling is lot more relaxed these days. The only problem was the 2-mile walk to the pub and back!
We all enjoyed it so much we will have another one next year somewhere in the Peak District again.
