With autumn approaching it is time to get your winter bikes ready! Just because winter approaches it is no reason to stop riding your bike. Winter riding is still a pleasure, provided you dress accordingly, and will maintain a good level of fitness for next year.

I have recently heard from Allan Pringle (via e-mail). He has been overcome the accident some time ago and has been riding his mountain bike during the summer. He has also started a new teaching job, which will give him a two mile commuting ride to keep his weight down! He hopes to make it to the club dinner this year.

It has been a much better year for racing with more support for club events. Don Cunningham has not missed an event barring the first ten, which was rained off. Rob Stevens has been a regular winner. Big improvements have come from Keith Jackson and Orford Spencer with Keith getting under the hour and Orford managing a 23 minute ten at the end of the season. Lesley Cliff and Ian Savage, primarily triathletes have progressed in their cycling. Bill Alcock has had a successful season of road racing with many placings whilst also winning some club events.

CLUB DINNER

Another reminder that the Annual Dinner is on Saturday 27 November 1999 at the Dorchester Restaurant at 7.00 p.m. The cost is just £16 for a good three course meal. Book early and qualify for a prize draw to win £30 worth of wine vouchers. Send cheques (payable to Sherwood Cycling Club) with names of your guests and any preferred seating arrangements to Rob Stevens, 2 Fiennes Crescent, The Park, Nottingham NG7 1ER.

NOTTINGHAM – SKEGNESS RACE

There were only five entries for this event but at least it was able to go ahead. The start was quite misty at 7.30 and, despite the sun soon coming out in Nottingham, it stayed cool and misty for the race with the wind drifting in from the sea to make a difficult finish. Craig sent the riders off at two minutes intervals in recognition of the length of the event.

Orford was a victim of the weather. A combination of the mist and water on his glasses impaired his view and the hard shoulder on which he was riding suddenly ended and he hit a kerb and fell off. Keith Jackson stopped to assist and fortunately Craig was near by and administered first aid but it was the end of the race for Orford as he needed his elbow stitching. Fortunately, it wasn’t serious enough to keep Orford off his bike for long.

The next most unfortunate rider was Bill Alcock who punctured twice and then, understandably, lost interest.

Gavin Wilkinson had a bout of hunger knock and struggled towards the end. This left a battle between Don Cunningham and Keith Jackson with Don coming out on top to win the trophy for fastest and was fastest on handicap. A fine ride by Don who has been the keenest rider of club events all year. Gavin took the Jack Ferguson Handicap Trophy, as the rules do not allow one rider to win both trophies.

RIDER PROFILE – TREV ADAMS

This is a new section to give readers an insight into some members cycling career (an idea pinched from Cycling Weekly!). This month Trev Adams is interrogated – next month’s expose is Rob Stevens.

When did you start cycling?

In 1974, after getting a new bike for Christmas

When did you first join Sherwood?

Again, in 1974. My best mate’s dad worked with Pip Brooks at Boots. Pip and Alan Dowlman were running a beginners’ section, I started coming out and everything went on from there. Quite a few of my friends also came out but most packed up after about a year. I just carried on riding because I enjoyed it so much.

What was your first race?

My first time trial was a Carlton to Lowdham and back (7 ¾ miles) and my time was about 26 mins.

What are you fastest time trial performances?

24 mins 20 secs for 10 miles 1 hr 3 mins 9 secs for 25 2 hr 11 mins 30 secs for 50 4 hr 57 mins for 100

What are your best road race performances?

I never actually got any top 6 placings but I used to be regularly involved in bunch finishes. My best was 8th in the Doncaster Wheelers Road Race at Harworth in 1982.

What do you rate as your single best race performance?

Nottingham – Skegness has always been one of my favourite races. I won it in 1982 in 3 hrs 12 mins, also winning the handicap.

What do you rate as your worst ever performance?

Finishing last in the Leics RC road race. I got dropped early on but carried on for the training. There was a prize for the last rider, but by the time I got to the finish, 20 mins down on the winner, all the judges had gone back to the HQ and they had already awarded the last place prize to someone else!!!

What type of cycling do you enjoy most?

I enjoy just riding my bike especially in the company of others. I also like time trials.

Who is your cycling hero?

Stephen Roche, for his 1987 season and, especially, his ride to Joux Plane in the Tour. He’d been dropped by Pedro Delgado, but rode beyond himself to close the gap, collapsing at the finish and needing oxygen.

Do you have an ambition in cycling?

Just to carry on riding. I’d like to get my Vet’s standard at all distances next year.

What is your ideal holiday?

Majorca training camp

How do you like to relax?

I don’t really have time to relax, as I’m too busy running a taxi service for my two children

What do you like to drink?

A nice pint of hand pumped bitter

What do you like to eat?

Pasta (I’m currently on a high carbohydrate, low fat diet and it’s about all I’m allowed to eat)

Four words to describe yourself.

World’s worst hill climber!!!

CLUB RUNS

Club runs meet at the Shearing Hill/Burton Road junction on Saturdays at 9.20 a.m., on Sundays from October to April at the later time of 9.30 a.m. We allow 10 minutes before we depart.

For those free to go out on a Wednesday there is a regular run meeting either at the top of Coppice Road at 9.00 a.m. or at Lowdham Island at 9.15 a.m.

The tea place at South Scarle run by Vicki Aslin is due to close down from the beginning of November. Vicki now works full time and opening tea rooms at the weekend would leave no free time. We are sad to lose this pleasant venue and Vicki has enjoyed the experience.

The runs have been well attended recently with a number of new faces turning up. With a large group it does restrict us somewhat on the choice of cafe, as some places are pretty small. This means I often have to leave the decision on where to go until I see how many riders are out.

Recently we went to one of our favourite tea stops at Wymondham. Other cyclists were already there and our arrival meant a full house of cyclists. The roads in the area are pleasant for cycling albeit a bit undulating especially around Croxton Kerrial. Rain had just started to fall as we reached Wymondham, so we took the direct route home via Waltham – it’s nearly all down hill from here. Fortunately, the rain stopped as we reached the lower ground at Harby. It had been a pleasant morning’s ride of about 60 miles.

If you haven’t been out with us recently make an effort and join us.

CLUB TROPHIES

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING6

The club’s AGM is on Monday 6 December 1999. Now is the time to think about any proposals you may have or if you would like to get on the committee. Let Dave Bostock have any proposals ASAP.
